Default Old car problems plus more bad news

Hey guys, need some advice on my project. Was gifted an 1986 951. About 100k on her and she’s prestine on the outside and inside but the motor on the other hand..

She sat in garage for about 10 years. So what started out as just a fuel pump and filter and refresh turned into a seized engine and an apparent blown head gasket(was sitting with coolant in the cylinders). I’m confident, I can free up the engine but am more worried about the internals. I’ve been down to the block multiple times on different cars but have never messed with actual Pistons and cylinder maintenance.
Just curious what you guys next steps would be after removing the head. Don’t know the extent of the corrosion just yet.

Spray it up with WD-40 and hope for the best which is about all you can do without a rebuild.
A little more work but youu could drop the oil pan and push the Pistons through the top but you're half way to a rebuild at that point anyway.

Sweet colour combination

That linked engine is an NA; you need an M44.51/52. Or a set of piston rings, bearings, and a local machine shop.

Nice gift

All depends on your mechanical ability, time and space. My motto is if a man/woman made it, I can repair it. If it were me I would rent an engine hoist or drop it from the bottom, get lots of ziplock baggies for the all the bolts.
Take your time, keep it clean, There is tons of information and help available.

Oil the cylinders and...
When you pull off your cam tower,be careful of the lifters falling out. Soak them in motor oil.Do your oil cooler seals/gasket and rebuild your OPRV. Rebuild the fuel injectors,do all of the engine seals, replace the water pump and timing/balance shaft components (do the shaft seals, rear seal if you feel ambitious) do the AOS seals for sure, new head bolts, change brake fluid(bleed all wheels),power steering fluid change (change all fluids, yeah, tranny),repack the wheel bearings and new tires and inspect the brakes/rotors,all lights, bushings,. Oil everything that moves and buy fossil oil for brake in and add ZDDP if you care to. Of course the turbo needs attention also. The belts would be dry along with all the rubber and the A.C. would need service, the hood, rear hatch shocks would be shot. Man,I didn't want to write a novel but there's a lot to do to an old porky that's been a garage queen. I most likely forgot stuff but as you read you'll get the picture. Have fun!

Got it, great advice. Just gonna tear into it and see how things go. Do you guys think the bottom end would need to be rebuilt? There’s no way to check the condition of the piston rings without dropping the pistons so I wonder if the corrosion would have got that far or just the tops of the pistons.

Just would hate to put it all back together and be concerned about ruining the cylinders.

Go ahead and put it up on stands . Lower the crossmember and drop the pan. Pull the #2 bearing cap. Also pull a main bearing cap and check it. If they plastigage out OK retorque clean the pickup for The oil pump and the pan, put in newgaskets and call it good.
