Default Flywheel lock and belt tensioner

Does anyone in the Cleveland Ohio area have a flywheel lock and belt tensioner tool for a 83 944 that I can borrow or rent? I am to the point in the project where I am changing the belts, pulleys and water pump and am trying to save a few bucks. Any help would really be appreciated.

You might have heard this a thousand times, but you really don't need the belt tensioner. Lots of manual techniques to use sans tool.

I understand that you want to save some money. But you do need to make a investment in certain tools for these cars. Kind of reminds me of when I rented a wet saw from Home Depot when I redid the bathroom. Then I redid the kitchen and needed a wet saw again. So I bought one like I should have the first time.

That's a good point to make, especially when you need to re-tension the belts after some miles.

Look at the Hanes Manual for the 944. I think that they stick a screw driver in the flywheel.But... Buy the Arnnworx lock, well made and super easy to install, then no worries (you can always sell it on this site later on).

But careful with the belt tension, there are guys out there with the Porsche belt zenmaster feel and have no troubles adjusting it by hand.

Flywheel lock: yes. Tensioner tool? Sorry.. but... never felt the belt tension is that crazy critical, and I’ve changed many a timing belt on a variety of cars.

Funny thing: how often do you really hear “timing belt broke!”?

Yes but however close You Think You Are it's not going to be to spec. Doesn't your pride and joy deserve something better than close enough belt tension like the guys do at the Firestone auto and tire center?

What my pride & joy deserves next is a new windshield; I can no longer see out off the heavily-pitted original! Yep. The car and I are gonna love that far more than a belt tension tool

I made my own. Piece of flat stock with oversized holes for the bolts so you can adjust it, then tack weld a small piece of angle iron to it to engage the starter ring teeth. If it is in a good position, finish welding, if not move it and try again. Literally took less than 30 minutes to make.
