Exclamation Only944 shifter kit issue

Hopefully someone on here can help me with this one so I can get my car inspected this week. Should have known better than to attempt repairs right before my inspection appointment.

I bought the Only944 shifter kit and went through the process to replace my shifter. Did the boot at the same time and everything looks great.

However, The hex bolt that holds the whole thing together has a much larger head than the circlip that was holding things together before and the head is impacting the side of the oval opening before I can get it over to 5th and reverse. So I effectively have really nice shifts into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but can't get over far enough to engage 5th and reverse. The head of the bolt actually took a gouge out of the oval opening.

Any ideas how to fix that? My fear is that I'll have to jack the car up and fiddle with the linkages underneath. Although, I may just head to the hardware store and try to find a bolt with a smaller head...

I do have their shift linkage kit as well, but haven't installed it yet. I've been waiting until I can get the short shift kit. I'm on the "one part per paycheck" plan and that's the most expensive of all of their shifter parts...

Most likely due to slop in your linkage mounted on top of the trans. I had the same problem.

if head size is a problem can you find a low-profile (maybe allen socket head?) bolt locally?

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. Might have a look later today just to see if I can find one to get it in shape enough to drive for the inspection.

Then I’ll fix it properly with the new linkage and the supplied bolt after I get it registered for another two years.

i did the "bearing mod" before only944 existed but used a regular hex head bolt and nylock nut.
i think there's a lot of variance car to car with the trans-end linkage like odonnell mentioned.

on mine i can get any gear OK, but i sometimes have trouble with 5/R because of the shifter boot, not the bolt.
