Newbie - 944S - Gearshift boot / Fluctuating Idle on start up
Hi All
Just doing some cosmetics on my recently puchased 88 944S
1/ Is the rubber gearshift boot ( under the leather one ) affixed to the shift lever in any way - Or is it left free to help minimise fumes entering
Totally get that it clips on to the lip at the bottom but wasnt sure what happens at the top
2/ On first start up ( when cold ) the engine revs rise up and down almost to the point of stalling - Is it the air flow meter ( ???? ) not sure what its correct name is
Many Thanks and ANY advice is appreciated

The inner boot is not attached to the shifter but should fit snugly. Are you smelling fumes in the cabin? If so, the root cause is likely an exhaust leak or could be a bad hatch seal.
If your idle is hunting around it could be a gummed up Idle Speed Valve or other vacuum leaks causing it to fluctuate. Replace the hoses and give the valve a good cleaning while it is out (you can find multiple youtube videos on this). Replacements are very pricey.

I have the exact same cold start issue on my 944S motor that I rebuilt 3000 miles ago. I don't believe I cleaned the idle control valve, so that's a good place to start. You'll need to remove the fuel rail and intake as it's attached to the bottom side of the intake.
