Default Manual steering racks

I am looking for a manual rack for my 85.5' 944 What is the true story with them? Supposedly you could have a manual rack car up to 85'?

Are all 83's in fact manual? Anyone guess on the amount of manual rack cars produced after 83? I spotted an 84' listed at the pick a part so i went to look just in case and of course it was a power rack. How rare is it post 83'?

In the US 83 only manual was standard and power an option, then power was standard and manual an option up to mid 85. If you find one it will likely need a rebuild which isn’t to complicated to do, however the intermediate steering shaft will certainly be toast and they are nla so you will have to custom fabricate one, there are some options for that.

Your chances of finding an 84 or 85 with manual steering is about as slim as finding an 83 with power steering. They just aren't that common. Unless a PO converted to manual steering at some point but then it isn't limited to just 84's and 85's (both my 87 and 88 have manual steering).

What is the intermediate shaft?
I was so disappointed when Gramps the 78 924 steering ate **** when I was out plying in the gravel & had the steering wheel cranked. Still don't know what failed but it was stiff and would no longer self-centre. I generally am much happier with my de-powered power steering rack in my 88 944.

Piece between the firewall and the input on the rack (item 2 below). All original ones likely have worn bearings and the universal joints will be loose leading to vague steering. Imo a must change safety item as if those bearings fail they can lock up your steering.
