My 1986 has the plug and it was never equipped with a rear wiper.

Thanks to all who provided input. I would say it's nothing special, hole ,no hole just same heavy assed piece of glass. Just that the elements for the defogger do actually work, well by that I mean it heats up haven't had a lot of foggy windows this time of year.

I have an 89 S2 that has a smooth glass, no hole. That's consistent with some of the earlier comments in the thread.
Given that a lot of the late cars had rear wipers as "mandatory standard equipment", I think it makes the smooth glass fairly uncommon. Based on a lot of comments from folks who have never seen one.
It's also a bit of a curiosity, as why go to the trouble to produce/inventory a smooth glass late in the production cycle... what was really to be gained at that point?

So, it might be worth a bit extra for someone who is SERIOUS about a wiper delete, as it's as clean as you can get.
I know I'm kinda proud of mine, and pray it doesn't get smashed.
