what headlight replacements are available?
Hi All
What are the current headlight replacements that are available that does away with the factory system completely (gettig rid of all the weight) and are bolt in? My particular requirement is for a race car, but mine is still road legal for Targa events etc as well.
I have found
1) GTP headlights http://gtpheadlights.com/ look very professional one rectangular reflector unit inside. RHD and LHD.
2) vintage exotics 90mm twin hella units http://www.vintageexotics.net/parts/...-headlight-kit looks nice but seems overboard as you can get one unit to do both high and dip. Problems for me with RHD light pattern.
GT racing dont appear to have anything on the website anymore.

I didn't replace the headlights but was able to remove the motor and linkage on my track car, search for the thread from a member VT951. You will need to open the hood and raise and lower your lights manually but takes 30 seconds.

1) the stock mechanism really isn't that heavy, there is only one motor and it's DENSE but really not bad. i can weigh everything later and give you a number
2) the manual hold-up brackets are really nice and will let you ditch the motor and pivot bar so you're left with just the buckets
3) the gtp headlights look great but the "vintage" ones in their own pictures show them fitting like ****...curves not right, gaps between lens and nose panel, no thanks.
look up a fellow named "marco antonio" on facebook, if you have it. he makes very nice looking kits like these for US$350 shipped.

Does anybody have experience with with this kit from 944online? Does it make a big improvement over the stock lights?

it makes an "ok" improvement over stock.
the REAL limitation of stock headlights is the wiring - go to Rennbay and buy their headlight harness and even ancient Sealed Beams will double in brightness.
H4 conversion lenses just make it better.

If you are looking for light quality, the h4 cibies are the hotness along with the rennbay harness. Slap some 90/130w bulbs in them and light up the night. The GT style headlights ARE cool and i've thought about it, but every beamshot ive ever seen pales in comparison to the H4 conversion. HID's have been done as well and are actually quite good. I'd rock HID's behind the GT buckets for sure, but thats more custom work to properly setup and considerably more expensive because of the parts.

Removal of the stock headlight mechanism and buckets and replacement with fiberglass/Lexan GTP-style headlight buckets is about a 10-15 pound weight savings. That's pretty sizeable and one of the bigger weight reductions you can do after the free stuff like ditching the spare/jack, stripping the interior, etc.
I have GTP-style lights with Hella halogen projectors. Light output is a little worse than stock with dark tinted covers, with clear covers it would be a significant improvement.

floatingkiwi,I got this one from the UK. cheaper than rennbay and direct fitment for our looms with rear mounted battery.

If you stay with the oem H4's I also got Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited Bulbs which are a great alternative to LEDs. If you do find drop in LED bulbs that would be better than these and our legal for our roads please let me know.

I can't imagine anything better than the output of HID conversion. I got mine from dapper lighting. The lenses may look a little funky, but with pop up headlights, who cares (unless you are a purist)?
I'd love to see twin small round lights per bucket for the fixed light conversions but haven't seen them, only for pop up "sleepy eyes" look. A pair of projectors and a pair of high beam would be nice.
