931 Rally Monte Carlo Historique - TLC thread
I bought an old 931 which has been sitting for a couple of years.
Before it was laied up it was used 4 times in the Rally Monte Carlo Historique.
The car was sold as a runner, but it wasn't, so I decided to tear it all apart and do a propper TLC, not a restoration.

This was the state when I bought it.
It had probably been parked on close to the sea, because there was surface rust everywere.
First day in the garage
The new co-driver was very happy with the car
The office
Been driven hard..
Engine solid on the inside, a mess on the outside
The paperwork to prove it is a race car (almost)

Some of the rally stuff:
Hydraulic handbrake, trip meter x2, Map lamp, Steering wheel
Hydraulic handbrake plumbed into the brake circut
Skid plate. I will make a new which is longer
Skidplate rear mounts. Realy sketchy, but has worked all years. I will relocate
Skidplate front mounts. I will reuse these

Sideproject 1: POD
I have always liked the rally pods, so I decided to have a go at making one. Came out ok, but not perfect.
Flower pots and Pizza cardboard..
After 3 layers of fiberglas and some trimming
90% finished product

Thanks. Appreciate some feedback
Today that misses was out, so I decided to coat my header and downpipe. I used black VHT flameproof, but in hindsight, I should have used a lighter colour. The black colour is just like sot so it will not be possible to spot any exhaust leaks. But then again its all welded up no so should last a couple of years.
Anyway, the VHT needs to cure, so while the misses was out I took the header in the oven and baked as per the instructions.
Last round is supposed to be 30min of 340C but the oven only goes to 290, so I just left it for 50% longer.
I also took the time to paint a test pipe. Some claims that the VHT Flameproof is a ceramic coating, which keeps the temperature inside the headers. I have seen no proof of this so I thought I would make a simple test: Paint half the pipe, heat for 5 minutes and measure, turn the pipe around and repeat. Results? It looks quite clearly that the VHT side is about 20C cooler than the non-painted side. This is at 185C Vs 165C.

The mufler tip had fallen off, but the box itself was in good shape. I just welded on a 3inch stainless pipe. Now I need someone to tell med exactly how long the tip is supposed to be. Easier to cut now.. Help please..
Serviced the starter while it was out as well.
