Timing belt/water pump kit

I need to replace all belts and the water pump on a 1986 944 that I recently purchased with 180k+ miles (not sure of actual miles). Only maintenance records show timing belts and water pump changed at just under 100k about 18 years ago. No idea if it has been changed since.

Im looking at this kit from ECS. Any comments about price, product quality or completeness of this kit?

Thanks!
Brad

skip ECS.

go to Zim's auto and pay 2/3 as much...and get the BEST water pumps in the 944 business.
i've installed 30+ of these kits without problem...

^Damn thats a good price. I bought my kit(i got the one with the gates kevlar belt) from ecs during their cyber monday sale but the prices v2rocket posted are damn good

most of the 944 parts suppliers are in the same ball park as ZIMS.

but ordering from ZIMS is a matter of convenience since they have the only water pumps worth consideration.

ECS just chooses to jack the price up by $250 because they're offering genuine Porsche coolant..lol

Thanks! Those prices do look much better and better quality components.

Any thoughts on a tool kit? I’ve never changed the timing belt before and it looks like there are a couple of special tools and fly wheel lock that I will need. 944online has a couple of kits that I am looking at.

Arnnworx for the tools-

If your going from the onion skins seals forward, Jason at paragon products is also a good supplier.

+1 for the arnnworx. High quality stuff.
A torque wrench capable of 155 ft lbs is needed for the crank bolt.
And being that pump has been on there for 18 years, go super easy and work those 6 mm bolts back and forth slowly! I just did my water pump for the first time on my car. I did get all of the bolts out, however I did have to helicoil one of the bolt holes.
It's a good idea after the pump is installed, fill and bleed the cooling system and pressure test before you start reinstalling the belts. It would really suck if you had to take it apart again for a leak.

I'm ready to get my order placed with Zims. FYI I have an '86 NA.

I'm confused between the two water pumps. There is the late version 944T 86-90 that is in my order. There is also the remanufactured water pump, late version, 944 87-90 (or 83-86 if updated). I believe this is the correct pump but it is out of stock. I have read the 944T model works with the block-off plate. Is that true? I have also read about the different size O-rings for the thermostat. Is that something I need to research more or is it not an issue with the new water pump and TStat that I am ordering.

Please let me know if there is anything I am missing.

Here is what I put together on Zims:

late/turbo pump with blockoff plate works fine, use the thin thermostat seal.

I get most of my stuff from Zims and they are a good bunch. Call them if you have any questions.

One thing on the water pump. If your pump case and / or impeller has been damaged by contact with each other, it is not rebuildable and you will not get your core charge refunded. In this event you may want to get a new pump instead as it doesn't require a core charge and doesn't cost much more than a rebuilt. To know for sure, you'd have to remove the pump before you ordered parts but this sequence may not be convenient for you.
However, as long as you didn't have a complete bearing failure complete with a wobbling shaft, you probably have a rebuildable core.

Good Luck!

Radial seals and the appropriate races, pump drive o-ring, onion seals, keys....

Make sure your tensioner cog matches your pump.

Test your thermostat prior to installation.

I don’t know what/where all of these seals are. Is there a kit that contains them with instructions? Are these difficult to install or require any special tools? There are currently no leaks in the front end of the engine.

I received great service/$$ from the boys at 944Online FWIW.
