Early 944 Door handle options.
Preparing to paint my 83 944 n/a and snapped the tab holding the linkage. Replacement linkage apparently not an option. But after a lot of reading confused.. Assuming no $$ for 968 handles. Will later handles work. Do they have a trigger. Versions on Ebay appear not to have a handle. Anyone been through this and care to share their experience and advise. Hal Stonington CT. Thanks

Later handles will work, but they won't match the outside appearance of what you had. You can still get new handles from Porsche, however they are not the cheapest (200 or so)

i believe i have a spare early door handle, don't know if they are L vs R? ill double check.
i also have a full early car's set of door handles/locks (hatch, doors, ignition, glovebox too i think) with matching key, if interested.

They wouldn't, your handles have to come from a 924/44/968, they all have the triggers. period. The side still matters on the early handles so there is a Left and right handle. Hit V2 up, hes got the goods for you from the sound of it.

checked, the spare single handle i have is NFG (broken like yours).
as mentioned i've got a full car's set of handles/locks and those handles are good to go.
however, looks like 944online might carry exactly what you need for a good price. give Ian a call to confirm fitment on your early car..

I saw that part and was excited to have a fix available but have read here and there https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...snt-exist.html that it does not work on early 944s?? Will ask Steve at 944online to confirm. Thanks. H

The linkage is not interchangeable between early and late handles. So if it's listed to work with both, it's incorrect. I can't check the p/n right now but I'm sure that is the one for late handles.
have a used early door handle I'd sell you, let me know if you're interested.
There's also this option:

i would just personally get a pair of script door handles if I were looking for an upgrade. The early 944 handles do look nice, but the best fitting and looking option IMO are the script handles.

You found it before I could mention it. Nice work.
Now comes the interesting and painful part; putting it back together in the door. My experience tested the limits of my endurance. Good luck...

I suppose it'd be mean to not mention a couple of tricks I used.
First, attach the black connector at the end of the new part to the ball that's right under the hole the door handle goes in. This is the painful part because there's not much room to work your fingers into the hole and if you're like me your index finger will be up against the sheet metal edge of the hole the entire time you're trying to locate the ball and snap the black plastic fitting on. Use a large flat screw driver to snap the connector over the ball. This is easier said than done. Practice swearing in German before you attempt it. There's no real secret to it, just perseverance.
Next, the short white plastic connector that attaches to the small ball on the handle. Tie a piece of thread to it through the upper hole, then pass it through the latch mechanism. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, snap the lower connector to the ball on the inside of the door nearest the strike plate. Holding it by the thread, pull it up into position next to the ball on the handle, then snap it onto the ball with the needle nose pliers.
If you're lucky, all of this will take less than an hour and you'll only need to do it 3 or 4 times (for a total of 3 or 4 hours).
