If you're thinking California, there's one must visit track, and that's Laguna Seca. It's between Salinas and Monterey. In my opinion the most exiting track California has to offer. I haven't done a comprehensive tour of US tracks, but I'd be tempted to say it might be the most exciting track in North America. If you have an opportunity to drive it, don't turn it down.
I retired about 10 years ago myself with the same intentions and never looked back. Welcome.

Hey Scott,
I couldn't agree more about Laguna Seca. Definately on my bucket list. I was out there 4 years ago for the Rennsport Reunion and it sure looks like a lot of fun. And a beautiful setting. I've done some very preliminary investigation. It looks like there are "track days" there but few and far between.
And I want to give you a personal shout out. I lived in SLO for a short while. I had a Miata then. I really enjoyed heading up your way. I remember especially the Creston road (?) and the road that ran out to the intersection where James Dean died as being a lot of fun. Great stuff those roads around you. You're a lucky guy to be living in that area!
