Default 6-speed gearbox for 400hp 944

A friend of mine has a rally/track 951 which delivers up to 400 hp. Is there any 6-speed gearbox that fits in a 944 and can transmit that amount of power? Or maybe it's cheaper to beef up a 968 transmission?

Don't know about the power but maybe the torque would be ok.

Passat B5 6 speed is cheaper and can be made to fit.
I'm developing a bolt on kit, currently stuck at the linkage.

There are a few people interested, I know.
Kit consists of gearbox output flanges, main shaft connector + hardware, mounts and linkage.
I have yet to sort out the linkage and mounts...mounts being an easy thing.

Here is an assy and control drawing shot of the connector.

You would have to hack up the gearbox housing to use such a linkage...perhaps for some applications that would be ok.
Maybe I can break up the kit and not include the linkage.

The 968 transmission (01E) should be able to handle that power without modification. However I would recommend you install an external cooler. It is not plug-and-play, it does require some other 968 parts to install.

Champion motorsport used the 01E it to put down >400 AWHP on a car that got launched hard every weekend.

Lots of people put >800 AWHP through the 01E.

If your friend launches the car on pavement I would recommend investigating the upgraded 1 & 2 shift collars. May require a gearset with a different ratio.

Morghen, post a pic of the shifter linkage input on the trans. May be possible to put a capstan somewhere as an intermediate linkage point and use ball joints and heim joints to translate the motion correctly.

You might also consider using cables instead of a linkage. Lighter, goes around corners easily and eliminates the "Rube Goldberg" and affiliated expenses. Just a thought. Or, perhaps a combination of the two. just sayin'..

I was under the impression that the 968 transmission is particularly weak and not suitable for much more extra torque. Am I wrong?

Is there any weight advantage to the B5 transmission, does it weigh any less?

You can make either a 944 Turbo AOR transmission or a 968 type 01E work for 400 hp. The key to reliability and survival is proper service and maintenance of the gearbox: keeping the fluid clean, servicing the bearings etc as they wear. With regard to an external cooler, I'd first check to see what sorts of temperatures are typical for your trans fluid in use (track, rally, etc.). Add a cooler if the temps are excessive, else keep it simple and reliable.

I have run/raced 400 rear wheel HP through an S2 box.

I cryo-treated the ring & pinion, run high quality fluid (recommended by Paul Guard), guards dif and a cooler. No problem, very reliable.
