Remove the gearbox on a 968
Hi,
This is my first post and my first problem with the 968.
I have to remove the gearbox, guess why....
Im not totally lost in the garage becuse of my other Porsche, and old 911 from –73 and two seasons of racing with a BMW M3.
I haven’t done anything to the 968 because it just works.
But I have been annoyed of the whining sound from the gearbox and got hold of an Audi mechanic with experience of the 01E gearbox.out.
Could anyone give me any advice on how to remove the gearbox on the 969?
I have found and article describing the 944, I guess its similar.

He will do a renovation of the gearbox after Christmas so I need to take it
I’m grateful for all info I could get.
Best regards
Anders

Wipperman, no problem. Here is the entire process:
Lift car, remove inspection hole in torque tube and access hole cover in tube housing.
Remove cheesehead bolts holding the coupler to the trans shaft.
Remove cheesehead bolts holding the coupler to torque tube shaft.
Both the above will require you turning the engine. Make sure you do it clockwise. You can achieve that my turning wheel.
Slide the coupler towards the trans shaft and make sure it disconnects the torque tube shaft and trans shaft.
Remove CV shafts inner bolts to the trans.
Hang them by a hanger.
Disconnect reverse cable.
Install a jack under trans.
Remove the 2 transmission mounting bolts.
Disconnect shift rod from linkage.
Remove bolt holding trans to the torque tube housing.
Lower the jack.
Install is reverse.
You might want to soak the coupler with WD40 the night before to help slide it. It helps a bit. Also, to remove tension on the coupler, you can install jack under trans.
Good luck.

Three Wheelin'
Instead of turning the engine as mentioned above i just depress the clutch and turn the drive shaft freely till the bolts line up....this obviously requires more than one person

Hi,
Thanks for your help.
I managed to remove the gearbox, pretty straightforward except for the coupler, that was a though one.
I pretty slow sometimes so I got hold of the PET disc and studied the gearbox linkage before removing.
I have been in contact with a shop that is specialized in Audi, they have a lot of experience of the 01E gearbox and a lower hourly rate than the Porsche shops.
The 968 will be on the road in a couple of weeks.
Thanks!
