Photobucket rippoff - imbedded images gone.
I am not alone in using Photobucket for many of my posts and recently was more than surprised to notice that these photos have been replaced by broken links... and Photobucket is demanding $400 per year to restore the links.
This just happened in the last month or so:
https://petapixel.com/2017/07/01/pho...-embedded-web/
As a member one can post photos directly, which I will do from now on, but this leaves some of my brilliant contributions of limited use without the photos. I was just looking at a classified which was photoless because of the Photobucket blockade.
Any ideas of what to do?

Having just gotten back into the 944 game, I've noticed 70-80% of the DIY's, how-to's and helpful posts on rennlist of the past are now totally useless. Some of the pics you can click on and it will open it on PB's site but most don't. They have pretty much upended all auto forums and it's a shame. A lot of knowledgeable people aren't on RL anymore and with the photos of their posts gone, their knowledge is lost too. It's frustrating to say the least.

What motivates members to host pictures anywhere but on Rennlist? Seems like all remote-hosted pictures eventually turn into red X's on this board and others...?

Hosting it elsewhere normally gives you better control and organization of your photo library. Rennlist doesn't provide good software to do this. It's important to some people that they have control over their content, the ability to organize it, enhance it, title it and embed it wherever they want, etc.

Your contributions are among the most valuable. Do you intend that gift for the community or for the RL enterprise?...Bruce

Yeah, I wasn't being critical at all, just genuinely curious what I was missing. I guess everyone has their reasons. Thanks for the kind words about my posts When I post things, I do generally think it becomes part of the public domain (to the benefit of IB no doubt). My fear is that RL somehow shuts down or loses 15 years worth of posts, or starts charging to search or the like. The assembled body of info about these cars on this site is invaluable, especially to those of us who can remember trying to fix cars using nothing but a single Chilton's manual covering all cars built from 1972 to 1979.

Is there an issue with just uploading the photos directly through the forum here? No need for embedding an external source. It just sucks that a lot of great writeups over the years used photobucket, so now the pictures are all dead.

Hosting on another site rather than uploading directly to RL allows you the option to include descriptive text directly adjacent to the photo, something a direct-upload doesn't; instead it places all your text first, then adds the images.
Hosting pics from your RL account is better. IB and RL have a serious interest in maintaining the great user experience, as it keeps members here and also makes for good traffic numbers. There's no reason to believe that RL will decide to dump user account pictures but maintain uploaded images, at least none that I can see.
Yes, you need to maintain your paying membership to keep your RL web account available, and that may be an issue. I really don't know if IB keeps hosted images and their links available even after a paying member stops being a paying member. [scratches head -- need to ask the brain trust...] I've only been here since the beginning of time, so haven't gotten around to opening a hosted account for pics here. I admit it, I'm a little slow on some of this stuff.
I do keep a local FTP host on line for secure business file transfers via VPN. It would be relatively painless (less than $200) to add another FTP or web host. But that doesn't solve the problem for others. If I decide to pull the plug, all that stuff is lost. Hmmm.

If you use the little yellow icon with a picture of mountains and moon, rather than "manage attachments," you can put your own text under each picture, like this:

I always make sure to upload my images to RL, even if I have them hosted elsewhere, for precisely this reason. If RL goes belly-up, or puts up a paywall, then whatever, the text *and* the images are lost. But I figure there's nothing worse than coming across a write-up with broken images that says "Be sure to tighten the bolts in the order shown!".
I also resize my images around 1024x768 / 200KB to reduce bandwidth and ease the storage burden. I figure in some small way this may help ensure IB continues to keep the content live.

It's a freaking scam. They waited this long so that critical photos by the billions went dead and then they only allow you to have 3rd party sharing on their highest plan at 40.00 a month. I have 30k eBay listings that I used Photobucket for pics in the descriptions. Having to pay someone to " remove and replace " all those links.

Started a thread on Pelican on that subject when PhotoBucket screwed my account up. I started using Flickr for now.
