Old School 924 2.0 Engine

1 Attachment(s)
Just finishing a 2L 924 engine destined for a Bonneville Land Speed Record attempt in a 924. Although this engine is far outclassed by 4V technology, it can still hold its own in a race environment. My experience is that it's quite reliable to 8000rpm.

Sweet!
Would love to see the aero work on the 924.

More details, please.

I build a sweet NA that pulls hard to 7000rpm from as low as 2500. The cam is a 251 deg @ 0.001" with 14mm lift. Tried a David Wizard terminatr box after the tuned headers. Knifeegded crank and scraper. Forged rods and pistons. Still with stock CIS, guessing +150hp.

Cool, I've always liked the 924 engine, no BSs, closed deck, iron block, maybe it's just a case of the grass being greener.

Looks pretty trick! Details, please!

Success! For those that follow Bonneville Speed Week, the 924 powered with this engine was awarded a new Bonneville land speed record in C/PRO a few weeks ago. 145.632 mph average at high altitude and high heat, stock body, no aero.

Impressive performance!

Whould an engine like that be suitable for a street legal track car? Should be seriously fun in a really lightweight 924 chassis.

Suitable? Not for the street given the high compression, radical camshaft, solid lifters and such. Although it's proven to be durable (built a few 924 road race winners in the past), I'd think you could do a 944 engine for the same $ and be far ahead.

This 924 engine was prepared for a 2L class, but a de-stroked 4V 944 engine would run rings around it.

Ok thanks for info.

Kinda like the idea of a lightweight NA 924 for the street and track. It is just so sleek and narrow in a way the 944 can never be. Both have its merits.

Thanks for sharing this special achievement.

Could you give advice on porting the 931 head?

Porting is an art, for sure, and not something that can be accomplished with a few pointers. The head on the engine above included oversize valves, porting, race valve springs, etc. I can probably prepare your head for you, but need to know the application and your goals.

Sorry shipping the head back and forth is out pg queetion because i live in finland and the shipping costs would be just too much? what about the valves and springs are they off the shelf items? My engine is going to be for a trackday car with high comp, vw flattops, forged rods, itbs, camshaft

michaelmount123 05-24-2021 06:06 PM

Juho,
Valves are custom, there are none on any shelf. I used 944 valve springs for this build, with custom spring seats and retainers. This is to be a NA car? You may want to check on shipping prices, or have one built here and only ship it one way. Best to email me.
