Default Thermostat not fitting

My water pump recently blew and I have therefore purchased a new one along with a brand new thermostat as it too was destroyed. I got the thermostat from pelican and the pump from a Canadian supplier. The pump is the "old" style (at least that is what the supplier has told me) as is the thermostat. What is the difference between new and old style? The problem is, I can not fit the snap ring in properly. Half of it will get into the notch but when I push the other half in it dislodges the opposite side. Do I have the wrong thermostat? Or pump? Or do I simply have to force it together? It is very close but just won't fit.

Second this dilemma. PO bought a URO pump (I know, I know). It came with thermostat, rubber gasket to go around the lip of the 'stat, and an aluminum thin washer. Stack it all, and the circlip will go in as C.pan described. Take out the washer and it's too lose...
