Part number cross reference question

Part number cross reference question
The way I understand it, the first three numbers of a part number specify what specific vehicle type the part was originally installed on. The last six identify the part. If that is correct, can't any VW, Posche, Audi, or Seat part with the same last six numbers substitute for any other part with the last six numbers?

From what I understand the decoding goes as follows:
931.302.302.01
931 = model the part is installed on
302.302 = actual part number
01 = revision number
So for instance, I used a 915.302.301.06 first gear synchro ring in my G31 in place of 931.302.301.02. This would be revision #6 vs revision #1.
I would expect that the VW/AUDI part numbers would follow the same. I know that the ignition switch is identicle between VW and Porsche and the part number follows this form.
