931 Series II gas tank size?

931 Series II gas tank size?
I just went to buy a 1981 931 (Series II) gas tank and the dang thing is the same size as my early 944 steel gas tank.
My 944 steel tank is 17.4 U.S. gallons and looks almost exactly the same.
The Series II 931 steel tank is supposed to be 22.2 U.S. gallons.
What gives? I've read in 2 different Porsche books that the 81-82 931's came with a 22.2 U.S. gallon tank, which is the equivalent of British 18.5 Imperial gallons, or 84 liters.

Yeah, we looked this up, didn't we?
Just filled my 82 931 up yesterday... don't recall ever getting more than about 15 gal into it...

We talked about a swap over to an early 944 chassis.
I looked it up in a second source to try to make sure it wasn't a typo. It said 22.2 gallons also.
Now I'm thinking it was a euro only thing?
