951 engine in 87 924S?
Hi,
I'm looking at replacing my totalled 924S (944) engine with the 951 (944 turbo) engine.
Anybody done this? Will the transmission/gearbox handle it? What other issues do I need to be aware of?
Appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

I am aware of a few people who have done this, but it might take me a while to get an email address for you. Hang on and I will find some people.
It is a relatively easy swap, everything bolts right in. You would be best advised to take an entire 951 drivetrain, as the tranny is quite bit stonger and better geared.
The difficult part is the wiring. If you are confident you have a complete understanding of the wiring in your car, you should be able to do it. If not, get an experienced person to do it.

The orinal 924 actually had a box built by porsche. I am not sure when they switched to the audi made box in my car, but definitely check your cases to see if you have the more stout box.
Remaining driveline components are relitively inexpensive. I have personally cut 6061 engine mounts for both cars, and I believe the mounts and geometry is identicle. The only porsche "gotcha" between these cars is that the early steering rack spline differs from 944 by maybe 5 degrees - and will not fit.

Thanks for replying guys,
I'm having second thoughts about this. Maybe it makes more sense to replace the motor with the normal 944 8v for reliability.
If I want a 944 turbo I should buy a 944 turbo, right?
Does it matter much which engine code I use as a replacement?
Thanks again.

Nonsense! The tranny can handle the punishment, the Audi 5 speed was introduced in late 1980, and was used in all the 944s. The Turbos have different gearing but aren't that much stronger.
I would upgrade to a 6 speed down the road, because they are far better transmissions, but the 5 speed Audi will last for at least 30K miles.
The 951 motor drops right into a 924S, so does the 968 motor. If you want a NA motor, check out
www.20thstreetauto.com, they have complete 968 drivetrains, for not a lot. Part out the rest of your drivetrain and it'll almost pay for the swap. Have fun!

I've been thinking of this mod for my 87 924S. I am thinking a 944S or S2 engine would be less hassle to adapt to the 924S. They may even be able to use the same exhaust and DME. Anyone know?
