water pump??
i recently purchased an 87 924s. i know these are great cars but the timing belt needs replacing about every 25k miles or so. my 911 is is for repairs and my mechanic reccommended replacing my timing belt because i have no records for the car. he also said to replace the water pump with a new one?? why?? he said not to use a rebuilt water pump. i thought that if "it aint broke, dont fix it"
any help??

I think 25K is a little over the top to be quite honest. 50K or five years, which ever comes first (It is recommended every 100,000km or five years here in Europe). If you are bit of a tracker then I would certainly reduce the interval. Time and environments are major killers of rubber belts. Miles a lesser impact. Anyway in this case it is up to yourself.
As for the water pump. Unless you have evident of corrosion in your coolant system, or are using water and not coolant. If it ain´t broke don´t fix it. You can cause more problems replacing things for the sake of it than by leaving them alone.
Rebuilt water pumps are not a good idea. Only use new ones but only replace them when they fail. My old 944 still has its original water pump (1985.5 model) and has 175,000km on it. Water has never go into my coolant system though,

Early Porsche 944 waterpumps were known for failing. They really did need to be replaced every time the timing belt was changed. The later ones were better (and can be retro-fitted onto an rearlier car). FWIW, I think you have the updated pump if you have an '87.
Also, a lot of people who have purchased rebuilt water pumps have had them fail within 10,000 miles.

hey thanks guys,
last weeks misfortune to my 911 actually turned up some good, while at the mechanics garage with the 924s (the 911 is having a tranny rebuilt....ouch) the mechainic looked at her car and thought it was familiar..it was..he is going to give me copies of teh work he performed for the PO. turns out im just coming up on about 30k for a new timing belt and the water pump was replaced 30k ago!!!
