924 “Snailshell” Transaxle CV shafts
 

Hey everyone, first time posting, long time reader!

I’m doing a weird custom car build right now that’s using a ‘80 924 na 5spd transaxle, but not the original cv shafts. The only Porsche item on the vehicle will be this trans, so I was hoping someone might have come across a cv shaft that would bolt up to it, and hopefully it’s not a one off flange. Ideally something readily available that can then be modified to work with the uprights I’ll be using for this build. The Porsche units aren’t readily available for me.

My unit has the 20mm input shaft,G31 I believe.

I think that is either a 931 trans or a '79 NA 924 trans. I think all of the '80 NA 924 had the audi 5 speed. The only NA 924 that had a snailshell was in '79. Not sure if what the differences would be between the NA and 931 snailshell, maybe only gearing?

Do you know if the snycros are any good in that trans? I have a '79 with the snailshell that had worn out syncros and would grind if I rushed the 1-2 gear shift. I am not sure if the syncros are still available for the snailshell. Part availability might be something to also look into.

As for the axles, another board member that I know just bought custom axles from The Driveshaft Shop. Maybe they can make a custom axle for your build???

The build will be on Locost forum, as it fits there much better. 46 Willy’s Jeep with a zx10R engine in the front, prop shaft to the transaxle in the rear. Full custom frame, super low and double wishbone pushrod setup on all 4. Like I said, odd. Lol. I’ll be leaving the transaxle in one gear all the time and shifting with the bike sequential trans.

From what I was reading online a few years and models had a similar snailshell design, but I couldn’t firmly say what mine is. It does have the thinner input shaft size, of the two I heard were available (20mm or 25mm). But it is a 5 spd. I’ve shifted it through the gears.

I figured I would be getting custom shafts made (or fabbing them myself) at one point. Just wish I knew exactly what flange could bolt up to it so I could possibly get away with something less expensive than Porsche units that I need to modify anyway.

what is the bolt pattern?
typically 6x100 or 6x108, IIRC in VW/Porsche. since the 931 used the same 5-lug suspension as the early 944 i would think that early 944 axles may be suitable, or something close from VW.

Bolt pattern (from what I can tell) looks like 6x87 at the trans.

Your's is a '79 924 non-turbo. The turbo box (931) has a 25mm input shaft.

These are terrific gearboxes. I ran them in my race cars for many years, first a unit like yours, later the turbo and GTR box to handle more torque.

Im going to be using Solstice uprights and hubs, but need to adapt those cv’s to this trans.
Anyone have a wrecked set of shafts laying around? Just need the trans side

Can I get an lsd for this unit?

A few of these NA transaxles had LSD, but very few. Further, it's a one year 1979 only trans, so good luck Threre's a number on the bottom center rib. If the number is followed by a "/xx", it's an LSD box. You'd probably be better off welding the spider gears to lock the rear.

I have some parts for it if needed.

It definitely doesn’t have one now, and not sure a street machine would be good with a welded rear end. I was hoping I could just buy a cheap set of plates that would fit this unit. Anyone looked for one of those with success?

Not sure what the inside of this unit looks like, to know what style lsd would be needed. Does anyone have pics of the spider gear inside?

Oh... I presumed this Jeep was for off-road only. No, welded spiders for the street are NFG.

No, this is going to be very low and hopefully fast and driven on the streets for sure.

It takes the same LSD as a type 915 (911 '72 - '86) transmission. The Guard LSD is the class act, but there are other options as well.

Alright guys I need some help with this still. I haven’t found cv shafts for this gearbox yet. I did find some cv’s but I need a whole shaft that I can cut and splice to my outer half’s.
On this site Here it shows the cv kit which appear to be the correct diameter, 100mm, but the shafts which are significantly cheaper since I only need one, say for the turbo model but don’t tell me the cv diameter. Can anyone tell me if those would fit? Or direct me towards a complete cv that does fit?
