Default Can I rebuild my 87' 924S Motor? What to look for...

I have an 87' 924s that was running splendidly *cue sad music*, but all of sudden started running very roughly. Pulled over as fast as I could and checked the oil level....low. Oh boy. Added some more oil and nursed her home. I'$4-6m contemplating an engine rebuild, but wanted to get some thoughts on:

1) cost to rebuild professionally - I'm seeing $5-10k
2) buy a rebuilt motor - $4k and up
3) rebuild myself - $4k and up?
4) Swap in a used engine - ~$1-2k
5) Do an LS Swap

Now I'm the first to admit I'm relatively speaking a car noob, so please feel free to point me to other links I may have missed.

Now the primary question: if I was to rebuild (myself or otherwise), what would I need to look for to determine if it can be rebuilt?

Thanks!

First thing you want to do is run a compression test as well as a leakdown test, then you drop the oil pan
and have a look at the rod bearings !
Those engines are tough and can take a lot of abuse , not sure a low oil level can do a whole lot of damage, especially if you pulled over quickly ...

Don't panic yet !!!

Sorry for late reply. Busy as all get out.

Unfortunately despite care taken one of the left side engine mount arm threaded flanges fractured when removing the bolt (on the block side). Since another bolt was broken off, I'm now down to two bolts.......time for a new engine.
