Default Holbert 924 Turbos

HI All - In my quest to learn all things 924/944/968 I have been trying to find more information on the Holbert 924 Turbos sold in 1980 and 1981, specifically their Carrera GT conversion. There seems to be a lack of information out there. Can anyone here tell me much about these cars? Or point me in the direction of where to get more information?

Any information would be very helpful. Thank you in advance. Erich

Get yourself a copy of Roy Smith's book, Porsche 924 Carreras: Evolution to Excellence. It has more info than anyone could ever hope to remember.

Amazon Amazon

May '17 Pano also has an article on a Holbert-built GTR.

Hi Erich, I worked at the dealership as a salesperson from 1977 to 1981. I personally sold the first complete 924 Carrera GT conversion to a gentleman in Florida. It was Guards Red and came out perfect. You could not tell it from a real Carrera GT. We also did a number of 924's with Holbert's own fender flare kit, probably about 10. We added a Windblown turbo kit to some of them. Not as attractive as the Carrera GT conversion, more aggressive. I don't think more than 2 or 3 complete Carrera GT conversions were done. We had a real Carrera GT 937 on loan from Porsche for a while, that's where we took the molds from for the body work. The car was a hoot to drive, faster than a 911 and much easier to drive. Al Holbert was totally committed to the 924. Holbert Racing became the official assembly operation for the 924 DP kit cars, even though the 924 DP that Doc Bundy drove to the 1980 DP National Championship at the Runoffs was not a kit car, but a used up EPA test car- I know I drove it back from Porsche-Audi HQ in north NJ it was a mess! Holbert Racing also advanced the 924 Turbo racer project that started with an ex-factory LeMans 924 GTP that Al, Doc and Rick Mears drove at the Daytona 24hour in 1981. That project saw a few cars built in the Warrington, PA shops and sold to other racers plus 2 924 Turbos raced by Doc Bundy in the SCCA Trans Am. The second one a complete tube frame car designed by Al and Lee Dykstra. All is outlined in that excellent 924 Carrera book mentioned below.
