924S Gas Tank Upgrade - who's done it?

As an area for improvement, I'm looking to perform the work outlined in this thread on my 924S-

http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=29582

Looks to really be an optimal Best of both worlds - increased fuel capacity and eliminate the metal tank prone to old age leakage.

Anyone here do this mod? Testify!

Sorry, have not done it, but It's an interesting mod and probably worth the installation work effort if you plan on keeping the car a long time. I don't think very many 924S owners have done the mod since getting the body parts is probably the hardest part of the mod, and Rasta makes the installation look so easy.

I have the parts and will probably do this at some point in time. My 924S does have a gas smell when filled up, so using the larger tank and replacing the hoses at the same time should bring it back to 100% with increased capacity benefits.

Thanks Paul.

I've got a few of the parts OH, and you're absolutely right - Rasta makes it look sooooo easy.

I talked about this with a local enthusiast who indicated that welding the old style transmission mounts to the newer style cross brace makes for the 'icing on the cake' as this makes it easier to mount/remove the transmission as well.

Still scratching my head on that one...

aside from fixing a leak (which can be done by any radiator shop) or getting more capacity, what's the goal?
"early type" trans mounts are (IMO) far superior to the late style banana hammock.
still have 2x 17mm bolts to drop the trans from the body like late x-member, but the trans is held much more securely than on late models.

The goal is 3 part-

1) increased capacity
2) improved material longevity
3) easiet transmission installation/removal

Jay, if I recall reading correctly somewhere, you can't use the new plastic tank with the old trans crossmember. A part of the plastic tank goes above the new style trans mount and the old one doesn't have the enough gap space to allow the tank to fit.

But then maybe I was having a bad dream that night...........

You're right Paul, cannot use old style transmission x-member with plastic tank.

But I'm told you can weld old style mounts to the new style x-member...

I am in the middle of this mod at the minute, rear of car stripped, old cross member cut out, new tank sender lines etc purchased as well as the four new chassis parts. The thing that swung it for me is that the captive nuts are there under the old cross member waiting to be used.
