Default 88 924S Won't Charge Battery

Hello All,

I am new and this is my first post. I have owned a 1988 924S for about 16 months and have never really had it on the street, I've just been working on it and would like to drive it soon.

My current issue is that the car runs, but won't charge the battery. I tested it from the battery with a volt meter and thought the alternator was not charging, so I replaced it, but it still did not charge the battery.

I checked all the fuses that I could find (only under driver's side of dash), they seemed to be fine. My neighbor came over to help and said that the "energizer wire" (blue) coming off the alternator was not working.
I bypassed the blue wire (a schematic showed it ran to the security system) and ran it directly to the battery, from the alternator. It charges now, but there is this continual clicking sound. In fear of causing more problems, I disconnected
my bypass wire and am now back where I started not sure what to try next.

Should I bypass the alarm, which I have never heard work? I did not even realize it had an alarm on it until I went to adjust my clutch. I'm lost, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jared

Check the charging indicator light bulb in the instrument panel; if it's open the alternator will not charge.
Other possibility is an open in the wiring.

You should be able to locate and download a Porsche electrical service manual to troubleshoot the wiring.

The open wire could include the alarm horn being disconnected.

Great information, thank you so much. Currently, I am trying to remove the dash cluster and replace the charging light bulb. Have a great day!

I have a 88 924S , great car . I would advice to use the Porsche tequipment battery charger. keeps the battery going and it is also capable of charging a flat battery despite urban myths that it doesn't ! I have charged twice the battery in the 924S and it only took a day each time ....

PaulD, I finally figured out how to remove the gauge cluster, noticed there were two missing bulbs (parking brake and temp), decided to replace all 12 while I was in there. The alarm light came on for the first time since I've owned it and it tested at 13.5 to 13.76 volts! I think it is fixed and I can't wait to finally get it out on the road. Thank you all so very much! Even after studying the wiring diagram, I hadn't seen that. God bless you All and Happy Father's Day!
