I'm getting a headache trying to look at that picture... where did you source that gas tank? And what size is it??
Just curious why you'd want that big a tank- a lot of extra weight when full- does it get that bad a mileage??

This is really neat to see this car, my grandfather was the original owner and had it until he passed away I think in the late 80's. Anyways I know from what my mom, aunt and uncle have said is the following; my grandfather ordered it directly from Dr. Porsche under the designation of brutus and that it differed (in engine size) from the other 916's produced. My mom's side had the car shipped from germany where they lived at the time, and it shipped to Florida where it sat in a shipping yard, where it was damaged by the salt in the air. It was then sold because my mom's side needed the money and we mostly lost track of the car until recently. My mom has told countless stories of them flying down the autobahn in Brutus, and whenever our family gets together and Brutus comes up my mom and her siblings regret ever having to sell it. So I thank you for posting these pictures because it is very reassuring to see Brutus in such caring hands!

Pretty certain that is the original steel GT tank the car came with ..includes through the hood filler neck , saw the same tank in an original 914 GT owned by a collector out
west , name rhymes with Perry ! Haha cool piece for sure..

yes they installed that gas tank in the car when the Porsche factory built it. It was the optional gas tank Porsche used for longer races where fuel stops were few and far between and pit stops cost time. It actually weakened the bulkhead even though they installed the bracing, but with a full tank of fuel make the car more neutral in its handling as we all know the sixes were tail happy out of the box.
That 2.9 probably got the WORST gas mileage, but was very exciting to drive while sucking that gas!

Congratulations Sir. A most excellent restoration job!! What tires did you use? I ask, because I'm having a heckuva time finding decent tires to use on my 1970 -6 restoration (7X15 Fuchs with rolled fenders.) The tires you show look perfect and I presume they perform as well as they look. Thanks in advance.

those tires are specially ordered pirelli tires from the factory. The guys wanted something reminiscent of the originals but slightly wider, so had them made. With rolled fenders and 7x15 wheels, we install usually 205x60 15 all the way around on the seven inch wheels.

Brutus from its rebirth from a 914-6 at the factory had the gt tank installed but no double grilled engine lid

Is the engine a 2.7 7R case or a AL case? bore and stroke?
