Considering my FIRST EVER 914 How about this?
Hi 914 RL group,
Considering my buying my first 914 but lucky for me not in a big rush.
I was wondering what you think of this?
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/4757582983.html
I am in the market for a driver, with needs to a well sorted weekend cruiser.
I would love to have an all orig 914, but the prices have risen.
My objective is to keep it for several decades. Then hopefully, pass it on to my son when he reaches 30 yrs old. In the meantime I would enjoy it.
My experiences are mostly on air cooled 911s and 928GTSs, which i recently sold. I do plan on acquiring another 928GTS 5spd.
Hoping to find a 914 close to home, which is Nor Cal, San Francisco Bay Area.
I would like to keep my budget in $5 ~ $9K range.
Will be a weekend to once a month toy, not a track car ( I have a 91 Miata for that ) Driven mostly through the twisties.
As close to all orig would be nice.
Which year would be best? The more power the better, naturally a 914-6 would be ideal, but above my budget.
I do not mind wrenching on it.
Any website or specials places that one can suggest will be greatly appreciated.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve, I just sent you a PM.
It has links to a bunch of info from when I was a 914 newbie, with similar questions.
You will probably need to to increase the budget a bit to get a real clean car, but I bought two very nice ones this year within your budget. It takes daily trolling of Craigslist, etc. and some luck, however.
Most people prefer the 1973 and 1974 years.
Here are mine (silver one is '74, blue one is '73):

The single biggest issue with these cars is rust. Put any potential purchase on a rack and look at it thoroughly for rust - everywhere. Nothing will derail your project/driver faster than serious rust issues. Aside from that, try to find the most original (still) car in the year you target. Personally, I love the '73-'74 2.0 after the Sixes.
Once you have either completely familiarized yourself with the problem areas of these cars, or have a friend or shop that is on top of these issues, then find a car and get it inspected and make the deal. BTW, I like the looks of the car you linked.
