I recall one of them had A/C, I think the silver or light blue one. It also had some really cool upholstery on the seats.

I have a somewhat unbelievable story I have been thinking about for the past ten years. I met a guy who claimed to own one before. Let me start by saying that this guy knew nothing about Porsche. .... And that's why I believe him. I had a 951 at the time, and met this guy while he was doing carpentry work on my house. He sees my 951 and says, "I used to own an old Porsche. A 916". I of course explain why it is impossible for him to have owned one...... Then he starts ticking all the right boxes... flairs, non removable roof, 2.4 - 6 engine, ect, ect. Says he got the car in trade for services rendered when the owner fell short of cash. At this point, I still tell him he must be mistaken and it was probably a 914 conversion. He says, "whats a 914?" I tell him what a 914 is, and he replies. ... even the title had 916 on it as the model. He apparently had a drinking problem around this time, was driving the car hard, and blew the motor. He didn't want to get caught, so he rolled the car into a gas station and left it there. End of story. Like I said, the guy knew so little about Porsche, thats what made his story believable. Is it the missing one on the list? Who knows. The only thing he told me that didn't add up was that the car was red and it had a/c.

Yellow 916 #0011 has a missing link in this sequence of ownership. When Luise sold it, the 916 went to the Porsche Family's good friend Otis Chandler in California. He was then the publisher of the L.A. Times (among other Chandler holdings).
Otis was an active POC member and kept some nice rennwagens in his collection (Vintage Racing). He brought #0011 into my shop in the late '70s, for an estimate on turbocharging his 916. He test drove my 2.7 turbo 9146 and I drove his 916 through Culver City. Otis wanted a boosted 916 and I had to talk some sense into him to leave it authentic !
After Otis ownership I believe it was then sold off to Matsuda.

My brother in law took several pix of that car in the paddock at Daytona. Peter Gregg drove it to the 24 way back when... have a pic of it on the wall in my garage.

The father of an old friend of mine used to import grey market cars to the US in the '80s. We were talking about that over dinner once, and he mentioned some of the cars that he had brought in, among them was a 916. I questioned that, knowing how few were made, but he knew exactly what a 916 was, and was insistent that he had sold one. Wish I knew more info on that car.
