Do 914 owners trade + $$ for 993's?
Because... I could be convinced to trade my 993 for a clean 914 6cyl conversion plus about $20k Maybe even a super clean 4cyl plus $25k or so...
Seriously though. I'd probably be better off selling my 993 and buying the 914 avail on the market at the time but I'll kick myself in 10 years for selling the 911 so maybe I'll just have to pony up some $$ for a 914 (and a 4 post to fit them into the garage!) I just always wondered if "trading" Porsches with friends would be in my life's history, haha.

Don't do it. While I can honestly say I love our 914's, I would never have traded the 993 for them. You can use the 993 every day, rain or shine. Living in MD, I'm not sure I would say that about a 914. Sure, you CAN...but do you WANT to??
To me, the ONLY replacement for a nice 993 is a GT3.

Funny how times change; when the cars were new I drove a 914, and later a 914-6, as my only cars and daily drivers for years and never thought a thing about it! The six was my DD for six years (and occasional driver 12 more after that. Never missed the creature comforts we've gotten coddled by at all!

I wouldnt call it 'coddled'...I would say we've 'matured'.
Growing up, our house didn't have central A/C either, but I can't imagine living without it now...

I saw just recently someplace, maybe on this forum, where someone had purchased a 914, '74 I think it was, with the original invoice. It was close to $7K. The poster equated that to $32K (!!!) in today's money.
Can you imagine trying to sell something that basic for that kind of money in today's market?

Rich,
I own both a 993 and a 914. You should be dollars ahead of the game if you sell your 993 and then purchase a 914-6 conversion. Prices on the 993 are really moving up quickly. And, though 914 prices are also moving up.....they are not keeping pace with the 993's. So, I would advise you to keep your 993 and look to purchase the 914 outright. Or, sell the 993, purchase a 914, and pocket the savings.
The two cars are miles apart in feel and drive. The 993 is really the epitome of the air cooled cars. Loads of power, great reliability, and lots of power assist. In some terms, the 993 "isolates" you from the road.
The 914 is the other end of the spectrum. You are truly "connected" with the road since there is no power assist on the car. You hear and feel what is going on. To me, this is the "true" Porsche experience. I just love the feel of being able to be in commune with the car as it moves along.
Six conversions, if done well, are superior (in my opinion) to an original 914-6. The original cars can be 2 to 3 times as expensive to buy as a conversion. But, many conversions have got more powerful and modern engines than the original 2.0 liter six that came in the 914-6. I've driven a car with a 3.2 liter "stock" six, and the performance was Corvette like. So, shop for a conversion. It will be cheaper and easier to fix.
