914 Picture Thread
I searched but could not find a 914 picture thread or a "show us your 914" thread. Is there one and if not is anyone interested in starting one?
Thanks |

Ok here are a couple, one with my younger son driving my original owner '71 914, the other the '73 I'm currently restoring... I'll have to dig out my pix from the first Parade I went to in 1972 with a picture of my dad talking in German to Dr. Porsche...
|
My '74, its a little modified since taking delivery on it from Downtown L.A. Porsche +Audi, new in 1974.

Dave292 - Thanks for posting those terrific pictures of the Irish Green Six. I love them.
|
Love'n this thread, makes me want a wide body 914-6 one day :)
|
I wish Porsche had continued with this car. It's timeless. The design is just stunning.
|
Some amazing 914s here !
skI...your photo with your son driving has both front + rear fuchs clocked the same, what are the odds ?! Do you like your wiper blades parked in the west direction !? Let's get about 914,000 views going here . |
1 Attachment(s)
I'm embarassed to say they park that way because after reinstalling the wiper motor and wiring I must have put the wires back wrong as that is where it parked. Like them out of line of sight so left it that way... even with a wiring diagram, being colour blind creates some problems.
I'm really wondering what will happen the first time I hook up the battery on the '73 after putting it back together!! Think I'll have my son nearby to disconnect in a hurry if I smell smoke!! A picture of my dad with his '71 he bought 6 months after I got mine- didn't want me to have all the fun. I luckily inherited the car gene from him and his dad... pic taken around 1972. |

Boy I wish this one was mine! A friend took this today at the Collier Musuem in Naples FL. It has reopened to the public 3 days a week as the Revs Institute:jumper:
Wanted to get in that place for years but never timed it right as they only let car clubs in sporatically... |
Steve - did you buy that front spoiler or make it?
The Collier Museum is open again? Looks like I just added a trip to FL! |
Hi Matt,
I got it from Patrick. I since have added a aluminum splitter, and better ducting to the oil cooler. It fit really well Steve |

Heres my 72 . Got it a couple years ago It was in two floods and off the road since 84' Folding in half from the rust. Actually doesnt look too bad in this pic but had gallons of bondo holding it together. Cleaned up pretty good! Still got the 1.7 but it gets the job done. Looking forward to putting more miles on it this season

^^ Very Nice!!

I'm assuming those are before and after pictures... what have you done with the old Beetle??
|
1 Attachment(s)
Yup the beetle is a 62 that was my brothers progect. We actually got them on the same day. coming home from buying the beetle for $200. We spotted the 914 and asked about it. The lady was a recent widow. We were the only ones that ever asked about it that didnt want to scrap it so she took our offer of $200. She got the better end of the deal I think :roflmao: But the beetle needed floors and a good rebuild. My brother is an extremely low budget kinda guy but we made it solid and its been a good car. Widened the fenders 6" in the back and 2" in front to get the look

Some of my "gone but not forgotten's" with varying degrees of seller 's remorse on each.
Most memorable was owning the Daytona winning GT. That's my wife and I standing with the car in the Daytona fan zone at the 24hr. We were invited to attend a reunion with other class winners and got to drive in the 24 minutes of Daytona. It was quite a thrill. I just recently sold the "purple" car and at age 66 probably won't do much more racing in 914's. ( but I still have my SM) Its been a great 22+ years with these cars. Regards to you all. Tom B. |

Just need to keep adding pix and it will stay there...
Moved the '73 outside for a few minutes today while cleaning out shop... sure would be easier if it ran... |
I would add pictures, but they would be of Papa Smurf sitting collecting dust while he waits on his crankshaft to return from the machine shop (6 months now!!...long story) and Huey on the lift with his engine out and torn apart. Not happy times in the Saville 914 household...
|
Bob,
6 months!! Was it bent or cracked? Was hoping you would sign up for Watkins Glen race this year. I remember the year before I started racing seeing your car in GT5 when I was working pit lane. Good luck on getting it back together. |

Good luck on getting it back together. "Got a little situation that I could use some advice on: our race engine has been having oil starvation issues the past year, and each time, it spins a rod bearing or breaks a rod. We think we finally figured out what’s causing it, but each time the crank needs to be resurfaced and ‘restored’ so we’ve been sending it out to Armondo Ayala at CCR. The past 3 times we’ve sent it to Armondo, he was great – 4-6 week turn around, everything done as he says, etc. Procedure has been that he does the work, calls for money, I send a check, and when he gets it, he ships. Simple transaction. This past time it happened was the VIR DE in November, so we tore down the engine, boxed it up, and sent it right around Thanksgiving. In January he called, leaving a message for me to send the check. I did, assuming it was done. Weeks go by, no crank. I finally reach him and he says ‘He’s shipping at the end of February!’. (WTF??) When I call him first of March, he says “I never said end of February, I said end of March”…this is why I missed the Road Atlanta Club race…we argue a bit, but I don’t have any leverage: he has my crank AND my money. For the past 4 weeks now, both me and Lou from the shop have called him at least twice a week, when he does answer, he says he’s “shipping tomorrow” with nothing. Now, for two weeks, he’s silent. Not answering his phone, no reply back to voicemails. This has now been 5 months, I am missing the racing season, missing all driving, and getting very pissed off. Is there any legal recourse I have with him? I know it’s not your area of law, and not even your state (he’s in Texas), but what would you do in this scenario?" In his reply, among other things: "Find somebody local and have them go over there, get your crank, and then beat his ass". That's kinda what I did...found a friend (James Shoffitt, former PCA Zone 5 Rep and E class club racer) who went over and got the crank. It was nearly done, just needed final micropolishing and the plugs installed. 2-3 hours max, but that's what he said he was doing months ago. So I had James ship it out to Pauter. They got it last Friday, said it looks good and might have it done late this week. Hopefully, the end is in sight.... Wouldn't have been doing WGI anyway...I'll be just getting back from a much needed week long sailing trip in the Caribbean...sailing as in a 44' Jeanneau :) But to stay on topic, here's a recent picture of Huey up on the Blue Ridge Parkway: |
Glad you got your crank back. I have been o your end with a entire motor that I wrote off as a loss, and it took me a long time to swallow that bitter pill. Fortunately, I found one of the best engine builders around and have had nothing but success with his motors for the last 8 years. Hopefully you get it together soon and get out there. Always nice to see Huey back from the dead :)!

Nice knock off spinners!!!
My '71 was turbo-ed for a while as well. A good friend of mine is a long time Porsche mechanic with several Bonneville speed records to his name ( some in a Carrera Speedster back in the 60's) made a turbo unit for the car- we had water injection etc. Fun to play with but a fair amount of turbo lag. Turbo was mounted top side with side draft carb, so always had heat issues. Did make it back and forth to Road America from Iowa with it. Turbo badge on back always drew a crowd in Porsche Park by corner 5... ah, the good old days... |
We need more pictures.

nah, he is a good autocrosser. Think he had a 46 second run and I had 49. I did get acknowledged for only using my brakes twice...I'm betting I was flat out more than anyone else also.... my fat butt crushed the hp to weigh ratio in the wrong direction.

Here's my new-to-me '73 2.0l on it's way to the mechanic after I dug it out of a garage where it sat for about 2 years.
|
Love the color. Congratulations and welcome to the family!!
|
Thanks; car is running! I drove it to work yesterday - what a gas. Very light, engine runs good, car goes down the road straight. I'll drive it a little in order to figure out what all it needs and then start on fixing it up over the winter. My goal is to make it a solid driver, not a garage queen.
|
Ok, I'm trying to get this car done. Got someone working on it to hurry things along (at least quicker than I would finish it). Here's one of the motor/tranny newly installed.

Also have seats and interior (with yellow stitch) ready to go. New windshield finally installed along with back glass (right at 5 years to the day since I got the car), front end bits are tied up and I finally have working headlights. Just picked up this steering wheel locally. Vintage Momo etch dated on the back 7/79 (bought NOS hub adapter and a new horn button). We are very close to being done. Hope to have it road worthy in the next month! Wish me luck.....

And in case you missed it, there's ZERO bright work left on the car other than the key locks on the doors and trunk. Makes the car look soooo much newer without detracting from the car IMO. Gives it a more eighties 911 look.

Very very nice car. Looks terrific with the black accents.

Now I'm contemplating taking it off the car again, block-sanding it, and setting up a booth inside my garage (using 2x4s and plastic sheeting), and spraying it. But, before doing that, I need to buy a new, larger capacity, compressor, a water filter, a regulator, spray guns, etc. The cost of equipment, and the time to do the work, are negatives. The fact that I hate doing body work is another negative. I think that I should take the car to our town's best body shop and just have it painted. |
Not mine.

I may have posted a picture of mine here before. I don't recall. If I did, it has changed quite a bit. It started as a very original '75 914 2.0. Like the contrasting piping on the dash and seats. I like a little "outlaw" in cars unless they are a real collector model...

Thank you. Everything was disassembled and powder coated. I did it to update the look of the car. Since it wasn't stock or a survivor anymore, I took liberties of making style changes. I love the way it turned out. But I may be biased :D

Where I would normally agree, I think the update to blacked out bright work really helps the bumpers "fit in". As I'm not a huge fan of them, it is a '75 and this way I keep the spirit of the year and I think it really works. It's not a hot rod or speed demon, it is what it is, a mid 70's econo box that looks better than original IMO. |

It is nice to see someone take the time and money to restore an early model 914. Seems like everyone wants a 73 2.0 and ignores the fact that the quality of the 914 body is the most important thing, not the option list and year model

If that is a real 916, I assume it is Peter Gregg's old car... my BIL took a picture of that in the infield at the Daytona 24 back in the early '70's. I have the picture on the wall in my garage.

Went on a little ride with some neighbors on Wednesday- I was supposed to take the 914 but wasn't sure it was up to that long a ride- probably would have done fine and I had to take crap from the 2 914's that did come. At least I was in a mid-engine Porsche...
Following the V12 Aston was impressive though- it sounded fantastic!! |
yes it is, thank you for posting it! I look at that car every day here at Automobile Atlanta, it is resting nicely in a big display case along with five other 914-6 brothers.

Hopefully it is driven every so often even though it is irreplaceable! Take it to the Parade in Missouri next summer. I'm sure it would be a BIG hit! (Went to the Tan Tara Parade back in the 80's and will have to make it there again! )

Cleaning out two pounds of mouse poo..... Other than the hell hole (don't get me started) the vehicle is rust and accident free. Needs new rubber bits, carpet kit and seat done. Them meeces ate some pieces, of the seats, peed and pooped on the carpet. Needless to write...........the poor dear was giving off a "stank' in the cabin area. This will remain stock in it's current form. For my next act............currently master minding a 914 GT budget analyses. Steel flares, Balsa and glass lids front and back. 3.2 as it is a fav of mine. |

Deserves an immediate light freshening keeping as much of the original patina as possible |
Found this car in a parking lot last week. You can have it for $500 or so. '73. I can get you in contact with the owner if you want. Interior is trashed.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...324f3cdee3.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...1b07399059.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...b163fe9a6e.jpg |
since the front fenders are already ruined, would be a perfect candidate for a steel GT fender conversion. You California boys are certainly spoiled with your rust free cars. Trashed interior is nothing to redo, but RUST of course is.

Have always loved this color!
|
I too love the metallic green, but this car is way too pristine to wear those silly rear flares and wooden steering wheel!
|
Should I put my anemic #” matching 2ltr motor back in as well for you? My 85 3.2 motor is amazing in this car that utilizes my original triple choke Weber’s as well. BTW, I also have the original steering wheel. Just like to change it out now and then.
Also love my rear flares. The fenders are all original metal that were simply heated and rolled to create these subtle flares that were done years ago before my 24+ year ownership. To each his own. |
Steve, I think your car looks fantastic. The 3.2 in it makes it even fantasticer!!
|
Thanks Mike!

Cars and coffee in old Scottsdale this AM. Lots of AC'ed cars but only one 914. And a bent windshield pre A!! Actually sprinkled for a few minutes (!) had to put the top on!! |
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...aa84cf661c.jpg
Added a "new" shift knob. A fellow 914'er at 914world makes these every so often and I got one for each 914. He makes them occassionally and will do for OEM shifters or Rennshifters. I'm sure since it is similiar to the knobs on 917's that will make the car that much faster... :) |
^^^ Yeah, I saw those knobs for sale on the World. Looks great!
|
Shoulda ordered a couple 'cuda!! :)

:) Was very tempting, but trying to keep both my 914s as stock as possible.

Hi Steve - Yeah it is moving along at a very fast clip now. We are keeping the World thread updated mostly as it happens. However I am headed down to L.A. next weekend and I think Kent is not posting pics because he wants me to see the progress first. I can't wait. I expect the front end will be welded on and possibly ready for body work. I do not know about the passenger rear quarter- hopefully that will be on the car too. Kent is a great guy and a true Master of metalwork. I am still trying to get some of my parts back from the VA shop..... but that is another story that may or may not be revealed. Cheers, Michael

why do the pictures i try and upload not show up when the reply is posted? Use the landscape graphic button to add photos, not the paperclip. It will open a new window where you select the pictures you want to add and wait for each to upload to the server (% counts up until 100% and then it shows a small version of your picture). It usually gets stuck at 50% for a few seconds. If it doesn't make it to 100% and show the image, it won't work. After you have the images of all the photos in that window, you can move them around to change the sequence by dragging them. Then you have to hit the "UPLOAD" button in the top right corner. You then have to wait for them to load into your post before hitting the "SUBMIT" button. If you don't see them online in your post before submitting, they won't show up. File size doesn't matter anymore with the current photo upload process as the server will scale down anything that's too large. I've uploaded up to 8MB photo files - it just takes longer. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...85a35b78aa.jpg |

The new chalk spyder pulled in just before me or I could have, except the car to his right (which is not in the picture) was a speed yellow 993RS!

914 Picture Thread
Not sure if I posted up the Project car I picked up a few years back. It was sitting outside for probably a few years and took me few more to get it back on the road.
I had no idea how fun these cars are!! Still a ways to go, but so much fun along the way:D. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...f950c3be34.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...bc26a92e7f.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...35e8183b7a.jpg |

Impressed Bob! You are making progress, but you wouldn't be driving now until at least April anyway...
|
April?!? You are probably right, but I want to get the engine in, new EFI and ignition system done, and started before then.

Busy cars and coffee at our local toybarn community this AM. A good friend of mine parked his rare "chairs and flares" Dino next to my '73. We figured we'd park the bastard children of Porsche and Ferrari together...

My Uncle in 1973 with his 914
|
Love the old pictures... my all time favourite uncle, my dad's only brother, had the first Porsche in our familly. My cousin, in the service at the time, brought his '69 912 home from Stuttgart. Even though I was 6' fall, I loved "riding" in the back seat at the time. Hell, it was a Porsche!!
Here is another shot from our toybarn C&C last Saturday- doing mid engine cars proud...https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...422070c3b8.jpg |
Couple of pics of my wife's '74 2.0 after fresh paint and interior. Color is Porsche Saffron Metallic which is a newer 911 Turbo color.

Find his build thread on 914 world- that guy is an artist with a welder......

Wow...it's been forever since I posted here. A LOT has happened in our 914 lives over the past few years...
Papa Smurf met his demise in 2020 with a stuck throttle that put me/us through a tire wall, over a berm and into the woods at Summit Point at 70 mph. I was fine but Papa was gone. So we parted him out and bought a Spec Cayman to race. Huey has basically been sitting doing nothing except a yearly SCCA Hillclimb and Okteenerfest weekend. So we've decided to make him more 'street' friendly - we took out the roll cage and when we get a chance we'll clean up the interior, fix some paint chips and just drive him more. Here's one of my favorite pictures of Papa Smurf from Ken Hills - ironically at Summit Point in 2019. That car was absolutely awesome. After we did a total tear down and rebuild (down to media blasting the chassis, rebuilt the cage and stiffened it up, etc), refreshed the engine to 370+ hp, regeared the 915 trans with LSD, got the weight down to 2050, wing, splitter, 12" slicks....SOOO much fun to drive. But as they say, all good things must come to an end... :( https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...20fca83bc1.jpg |
Oh...and note all the 914's in this picture...there's more than you think...
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...a4de24a308.jpg |
Sorry to hear about that... but you survived...
Didn't feel quite as bad when I got punted into the wall at Heartland Park in my spec Miata!! Luckily they're a dime a dozen... |

1971 Tangerine 914 1.7 “Jasper”
Hi everyone,
Our tangerine 71 914 1.7 Fondly named “Jasper” by my daughter (all our cars have names…) Been with the family for 8 years during which I slowly did many minor things to bring it back to stock (yes, I have the 914 Rubber vinyl sail kit but still holding off on committing…). Now tackling ride height/suspension (will likely post a question or two about it separately). Jasper was recently joined by a 1991 928 GT (“Bubbles”). https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...b9e58e017.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4042d9402.jpeg |

My car has about 8K miles on it now and is running/driving great. We continue to work on it and take it to the next level.

Thanks SKl and Doc. 2 beautiful cars Doc. My car was off the road for quite some time when the 2nd owner had it and stopped driving it and kept it covered in his garage. Then when I bought it in 2/2010 it was off the road until 8/20 when it returned to the road. I have the 2nd owner's log book of mileage, gas, maintenance he kept after buying it when it was 3 years old off the original owner. Of course it did not look like this when I bought it but that's another well-documented story on 914World.com.
|
of course the 71 models are much much rarer than the 70 models
|
Of course we all have cars we regret selling and top of my list was real '71 six... had two other 914's which I was never going to sell and I wanted a 996 GT3... my '73 2.0 looks just like it and felt great today on a ride after taking off 20 year old tires which rode like bricks. ( The '71 six is now being enjoyed by a fellow 914world member near Chicago so it has a good home)

the silver anodized 16s really really look good on that car
|
Yes they do- I have them on both 914's- lots more choice of tires in the 16" size and they are still OEM Porsche wheels. And Harvey Weidman does GREAT work...
