Default new guy

New guy, I've had '71 914 1700 since the late 80's rarely driven. I gave it to my grandson, but got it back. I'm getting it running again and plan on doing some restoration, have'nt decided how far yet. I have an electrical problem need help. When I turn the Flashers on, gauges blinks even the radio. It happened all of a sudden. Anybody got any suggestions.

Try replacing the fuses.

Sounds like a wire might also be exposed and not making a good connection. Has there been rodents in it recently ? Take some pictures of this beast

Try checking grounds. Sometimes if a correct ground is not available the circuit will find a ground through another bulb. Happened on my 356C several times.

+1 on the ground suggestion. I too had several "interesting" electrical issues with my 356, and with various mods on the 914 over the years! Many many years ago doing one "mod" on the 914, I started an electrical "fire" and melted several wires under the dash creating some really smelly smoke. Scared the hell out of me at the time!!

First of all...Welcome to Rennlist!

All good suggestions above - ground and fuses. Go to the fuse panel and make sure all the connections are tight and clean and not touching each other. 'spin' the fuses (or replace them) to eliminate any corrosion. Check for loose wires underneath, especially brown ground wires...

There is not a 914 owner around that has not had an electrical problem with their car at some point! You're in good company!!
