SS Heat Exchangers

Jay, you must look at them; it's a "if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck," kinda deal. The 1.7 liter and early 1.8 liter use the same heat exchangers. 022 256 091 F (left) and 022 256 092 F (right). Those heat exchangers do not have a forward (under the engine) joint flange; they attach at the exhaust ports and are one piece to the muffler flange.
Later 1.8s used the later 2.0 heat exchangers, which used a header that attached to the exhaust pipe portion via a forward flange. Those units might not be usable on your car. So, if you have your eye on a pair of nice 1.8 liter heat exchangers, and they look like your 1.7 units, go for it!

On all of the SS exchangers I've had, the only difference between the 2 liter ones and the 1.7/1.8 ones were the kickup at the back. The 2 liter ones are straight and the 1.7/1.8 ones have the kickup. I think what Pete is talking about is for the stock ones.

OK, I post this on good faith that someone won't jump on this. He said they are from a 1.8, but he didn't know the year. He bought a 1.8 engine and tranny for his '76 912E. Here is the link with the pictures.
(Edit: Took link down now that I have my answer.)

Can you imagine what a dog that car will be with a 1.8 in it?

Another question, where do people recommend getting the gaskets and bolts. Also, should I be using SS nuts and bolts or regular ones like the ones on it.

Nuts and bolts for the muffler don't matter. For the head studs, you want the copper coated bolts (need 8). I'd probably call Paragon Parts. Jason is a good guy.
