I Need Ideas - 73 914 1.7L FI
 

I just bought this car. I am curious what it would cost to convert to 6 cyl.

Also it has polished spoke wheels which I understand to be common, but not stock. I am at a loss for what performance tires to put on the car that won't hit the fenders in back. It has 165/15s on it. I was told to put new springs on it and use 195's.

I would like to turn this car into a rocket but am not anxious to spend a fortune.

Any ideas on sources for springs or hop up stuff wooul be appreciated. I am in contact with Pelican Parts in ATL.

You're looking at anywhere from $5K - $7K (and THAT'S actually on the low side) for a -6 conversion, doing all the work yourself (engine hunt, parts hunt, mod/cut/weld OH MY!). Rocket = $$$; how fast do you want to go? Everybody's gonna tell you to "Go For IT!", but they ain't gonna be paying your credit card bills ...

You can safely put 195/60-15's on stock-type rims (4-bolt Fuchs or otherwise) and can push 205/60-15's in some applications/cars. It all depends on what rims you have and how "straight" you car is.

Want an easier solution for a bit more UMPH? Drop in a <a href="http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/type4/914-engines.html" target="_blank">Jake Raby 2270</a> and call it even.

Ja, the 6 conversion costs big bucks. But what a car when your done. I heard that you'll never go back to a 4 cylinder.
I bought a set of Dunlop SP Sport A2's for my car 195/60/15. (It had 165 SR 15's) Great tire for the buck; $ 53.00 each from Tire Rack. You may be able to have your local Dunlop dealer match this price. Fit great even though my suspension is kind of soft and leans a bit.
