Post Now In Deutschland ... Rust question

Hello,
Well my car is almost here, well it should be tomorrow. I have questions regarding storage and such. For the first winter, it will be sotred with a car cover, in a barn type thing. I dont know about the moisture level, but nevertheless damn cold. How is that for the rust status. Its almost rust free and Id like to keep it that way.

Then it will be in a normal garage with no further problems I dont think.

Basically Id like to know how to store it properly and how to keep it form falling apart.
Cant wait to run it over those tight country roads. Though the little jerking problem escalated and now Im gonna have to overhaul the motor. Yay!

Hey man, welcome back!!
It may sound weird, but don't put a tarp of other non-breathable cover over it. Things like that just hold the water in. Any rusting you have will accelerate and you can devolop rust bubbles in your paint. If you have rust, paint it with POR-15 or Hammer-rite to slow the process down.
sooo.... how did the rest of the move go?? You in the military of something??

Where are you now....

If you're anywhere near Heidelberg I can show you lost of rust in a 914 to make you feel better.

I can also show you my very slow 914/6 project
(2 years into it and the wife doesn't believe it really exists - except for the damage to the bank account)

Get one of these, they're the business. My 914 lives in one every winter.

Nah, Im not in the military. Im just tied to my dad who was working on a project over in CA. Now hes done and everybody goes here.
I live about 400KM from heidelberg. Up by Paderborn. Id love to see the 6 conversion sometime. Theres a Porsche Motorsport shop over here in Geseke, they said theyd do my 6 conversion for about 25000 Euros. I said no thats ok.
I heard of those carcoons. But I dont know if I have enough space for that. I heard you can sprai a thin layer of oil over the affected arears too and it will rust slower or something. How about something moisture absorbing like pampers? Where in germany can I get the two products mentioned?
Hey the weather is looking better. I think Ill take a walk in the countryside.

Hello

Best thing to do is to use wax on the underbody and Sanders corrosion prevention grease inside the body.

The main problem with cars coming from hot areas is that the PVC undercoat and seam seals are dryed out and will suck humidity into the body like a dryed out sponge.

I did some research on my own since I'm not planning on driving my cars during the winter here in IL, but I want to make sure that I rustproof my restoration from the start. I POR'ed the wheel wells and made sure that the underside of the car was at the least painted everywhere. I'm planning on using a wax or oil based spray on the underside. Some people think that rubberized undercoatings are no good (the brits swear by the wax or heavy, heavy weight oils for rustproofing). Performance Products (out of southern california) has a few different car covers intended for different climates.

Take care,

I'm insulted ! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> My /6 is not a conversion - it's an original 914/6.

If you like conversions I've a friend down near Wiessach who is currently cutting up the only rust free 914 in Germany to make a 914 "roadster".

It's OK - In fact the only differences between a six and a six conversion is the engine mount and the number. And of course the value.....when (if) it's finished.
