Post 914 with a 3.0 SC motor?

Ok.. I know very very little about the 914. I spend all my time with the 951 and it's tribulations.. however.. I have a little project car that has fallen into my lap.

There is a '74 2.0 car that has an immacualte Baby Blue body, 2k on pads, calipers, and wheelbearings. It needs some motor work and a tranny (2nd and 3rd are gone). Dash and gauges are good, seats and carpet not very nice.

I have free access to an '83 3.0 SC motor and tranny with 92,000 on it, perfect non turbo seats, and 1/2 roll of factory carpet.

I can get the car for $500 and the rest for free.. however, is it possible to install the motor and tranny into this car? Even if the cost to me is a few grand for the needed modifications, it could be a very fun car to work on.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

it's entirely possible, and costly. go to www.pelicanparts.com and read their guide to a 6 conversion.

Yup.. that is a lot of work. But if I can restore my 951 to pristine condtion after an engine fire.. I MIGHT be able to do this.

The hanging factor is the tranny. I have a good 915 unit, and the 901 in the car is shot. $1500 for mounts for the 915, or $1500 for a rebuilt 901.

We shall see. I don't think the car is going anywhere soon.. so I have time to sit and ponder.

Thanks for the link!

It's very hard to do so as a favor I'd be willing to take it off your hands!!!

Seriously, you have a good start on a good motor but do you have carbs for that engine because installing that engine with injection is going to be a PITA. You forgot about about the five bolt uprgrade you'll have to do on the car which will go get an easy 1000$ Bulkhead motor mount, 914-6 oil tank, gt reinforcement kit (absolut must with an engine like that) flywheel, engine sheet metal... All these add up and make a lot of money so be prepared to spend$$$ The conversion is not that all bolt-on as some say.

I,m not trying to discourage you, but most 914 projects end dead and unfinished wich is not what I wish for you. Do your homework first, pelican is a great place to start and you can work your way from there.

Thumbs up

The SC engine conversion can be made and many have done it. You can see my conversion HERE.

But, it needs a lot work and ca$$$h. Think abouut headers, oil tank and hoses and external cooler and so on......

You told you have perfect non turbo seats. I have tried 911 seats from mid 70´s and I can tell they do not fit in 914. They are too wide. The 914 seats are very narrow. I have not find any seats from any car that could fits. Glasfiber racing seats are totally an other story.....

What ever you decide to do, good luck !!

Man, wish I still lived in Cincinnati! I'd encourage you to go for it, big time! If the car is as pristine as you say it is, and your engine / tranny is FREEEEEEE, you have a moral obligation to consummate this relationship!

One option you have is to swap your way to the parts you need. The Hershey swap meet is coming up in about a month and you are right down the road from that! the 915 should get you $750+, the seats $500+, the 901 you could sell as a core for at least $100 (do your own pricing; these numbers are SWAG's).

I just finished a 3.2 conversion and kept the injection. Just had to lose the air box replace with a cone filter. Tight, but it fits fine. Don't know how close the 3.0 hardware is to the 3.2 stuff tho.

You can keep the 915 / 3.0 together, but if so you'll need to flip the ring gear and cook up a shift linkage for what is effectively a tail shifter. (Store bought shift adapters avail, but $$$).

Give Jim Patrick (patrickmotorsports.com) a call, he makes his living doing this stuff and helped me out big time.

Cool

Well I guess the easiest thing to do would be to just hand it all over to me! I'll even give you my 944 as a trade....
