Towing thoughts?
As posted over in the amil lists:
I'm thinking about towing a 914 several hundred miles. Now I have the option of using a flat bed trailer, or possibly towing the 914 with a dolly. If I use the dolly, I won't hook up the drive shafts. I'll be using my Explorer and am trying to reduce the amount of wear and tear as well as keep the cost down some.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I highly recommend a tow dolly. It is more stable than a trailer in my opinion. I have towed 3 914's on trips of 1000, 500 and 600 miles.
Not sure what you mean about the axles. In all cases mine were attached to the transaxle. Just be sure that the car is in neutral when you start out. You could not tow with rear wheels on the ground and axles disconneted. It is possible to dolly the car with rear wheels up but you need to use rope or bungy cords to tie the steering wheel. The tires can "steer" some but you don't want them to turn very much. Also, I think you should remove the top for a backward tow as it may blow off. The 914 is not very aerodynamic from the rear and I would go slower than if front was up.

Towed 914 on U-HAUL car trailer 1200 miles with my 94 Explorer. 65 MPH mostly no problem. Just felt better keeping the car from bottoming out the rear valance or muffler.

Well I'm pulling a trailex trailer (THANKS DAVE) currently from Texas to Mass and am in Alabama. Taking a break for a couple of days to visit a client. So far my '99 Explorer doesn't even really notice the trailer and the 914 on it. Hopefully back in Mass on Thursday the 17th.
