Hello all,

6-7 years ago I was registered here under the username "AMC". I used to own a 1974 914 Beach Boys convertible conversion. I also owned 914convertible.com and Porsche914convertible.com

I ended up selling the car to a guy in Washington (may have been Oregon). Anyway, I was wondering who else here has or has had a 914 convertible? I'll try and find a pic of mine to post. I ended up shutting down the site and giving all of the info to a kid that started another 914 web site, I forgot the name it's been so long.

It was such a fun time in my life I just thought I'd post and see what happened.

You mean the conversion that took off the roll bar and made it a true cabriolet? I remember seeing pix of those many years ago... definitely looked different, but I would assume the folding top didn't seal too well did it?

I have the "original" soft-top conversion sitting in my garage. Back in 1988 at Laguna Seca we met an engineer...I think his name was Wilco. He had a black 914 convertible and my dad bought a kit from him down in LA. Well that year my dad and I worked on this project and I still have the car today. After 16 years it was time for a new paint job so I have it on jacks right now. I will see if I can find a picture to scan...

I was driving around Carmel, CA last weekend and I saw a white convertible 914 going in the opposite direction. I couldn't turn around to follow the guy but if I see him again I'll strike up a conversation. Look pretty interesting. No roll bar is right.

It's the first one I have ever seen.

Tyler- post a picture if you can- haven't seen a picture of one for YEARS! I wonder what it does to structural rigidity though?

The chassis was reenforced using a rollbar type steel tubing. I think the Wilco's did this too. I know BBR did. BBR also used lexan side windows because they reangled the windshield so the lines looked correct, Wilco did not do this I don't think.

No...Wilco's design did have you cut the windshield and tilt it back. This required the lexan side windows. I "think" Wilco sold his design to BBR or another kit company. They came up with a version that did not require cutting the windshield. It used a taller soft top...but much easier installation.

This is a picture was taken in ’87 or ’88. This is at Laguna Seca when my dad and I met Wilco. This was his original design that he had on display during the races…still looks good…before the Boxter was even a thought.

Those first 2 pics are of mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The second was taken at Lake Isabella in CA and the first was at a park, I can't remember which. I sold it to a guy in Orgeon or Washington. I kept the wheels and sold them to a guy in Ireland. The F.I. went to yet another person.

Glad you liked the pics. Wasn't the car noisy with no glass to isolate/insulate from the engine noise?

It was noisy but it sounded awesome with the quad tip monza exhaust I put on it
