Value of a 1975 1.8 914
I have recently found a 75 914 1.8 with about 80,000 original miles on it. The car looks to be in pretty good shape with a few exceptions: a fist-sized area of rust-through on the rear quarter due to a leak in the taillight housing and the typical 1st gear synchro issues. The car has had significant maintenence done to it over the past couple years: new SS heat exchangers, seals all around, turbo tie rod ends, fr wheel bearings, tires, door handles, accel., clutch cables, muffler, fuel pump, rear caliper, windshield, battery and general routine maintence (hoses, wires, etc.). Still has original L-Jet L-F.I. and 4 bolt Fuch rims, appearance package w/ side vinyl and gauge console.
I would like to get a general idea of what others might be willing to pay for a car like this? I am thinking $2500-$3200, reasonable? Any responses would be helpful.
Just trying to feel out the value of this car.

Look carefully for other rust especially under rockers and obviously under the battery tray, assuming it's still there! The big bumper cars aren't as desirable but under 4K is probably a good deal.

If you can buy the car in that range I don't think that you can get hurt. Be sure to check the usual places for hidden rust. Of course the right side suspension console under the battery. It's usual for some of the sheet metal to be rusty but make sure that the frame is not gone. Also look for repairs to this area. Make sure the passenger door gaps are lined up and the door closes smoothly. Do not invest in a car that has a rotted out suspension console.

I just passed on a 74 914 1.8 with 68K miles for 1900. too much rust in the bottom boxes, but the frame looked solid. I still think it's a buy- but I want something more solid.

I have yet to see the car in person. The owner states that the car is very rust free. Battery tray and surrounding area is supposedly very rust free as are the trunks and the suspension.
Owner has offered to put the car up on stands for me to inspect when I can. Does not seem to be hiding anything?
Is this car a good buy at $3000 +/- $200 or should I try and go lower?

I just looked at a 2.0L 914 about an hour ago. The trans wont hold 4th gear but the body is oddly devoid of rust. I offered 900 and we are working it out.

No body or chassis rust?! $900 sounds like a deal.
The 75 I am thinking about is supposedly VERY rust free (entire chassis) it only has the one issue on the rear qtr.
"I offered 900 and we are working it out".
Let me know if your deal comes through. If you manage to pick up a fairly rust free 2.0 for around $900, I may want to rethink my offer (lower).
Any news helps. Thanks for the info.

If there is surface rust like that, I would bet there is significant rust on the chassis. Also make sure to pull back all the carpet and check all the floorpan seems (behind the seats, on the side rails, under the pedalbox...)

Yes, I've seen rust like that, and it may not be accompanied by significant rust elsewhere. There's some sort of material used for sealing or whatever up in there and over the years it has become porous. (It reminds me of the foam rubber strip in the front fenders of an early '50's chevy.) In any event, once it becomes porous, it holds water and other rust inducing stuff that the rear tires throw back. As a result, it causes rust in that area from the inside out, so it's not surface rust. Of course you should check the other known problem areas of this car, but it's possible that the rust problem is confined to the area over the tail lights. I have a '75 that had this as its only significant rust area for the reason cited above.
