Bought First 914 today

I went to a local VW shop looking for recommendations for engine work for my type IV. Sitting on the floor were several engines. One of them was a complete 911SC dropout. I spoke to the owner and asked him about the motor. He said he got it to install in VW bus, but the bus got sold before he started the project. He got a 914 do do the swap, but sold the 914. I told him he would get his chance to do the swap.
I decided it was a waste to spend money on the Type IV motor. Luckily the place where I bought the 914 was just dropping out the engine. So I’m jumping into the deep end of the 914-6 pool. I don’t want to do a GT conversion, just a narrow body 914-6. I need a flywheel to mate the 3.0 to a 901, Oil tank and lines, mounts and engine compartment tin.
The 911 motor has the stock fuel injection set-up but I’m thinking about carbs unless there is a compelling reason to retain the CIS.

You know the old expression - "well begun is half done". From your photos you're well beyond well begun
Out of curiosity, what does a 914 in that condition (good body but needs a lot of work everywhere) sell for these days and was it running and driving when you bought it?
Keep the thread updated with your progress so we can follow along.
That's awesome about the 6 motor. Off to a great start !

I paid $9000. High, but I HATE RUST.
I consider extensive rust repair to be a waste of my time and money.. I had looked a several 914s most running and driving, but rusty messes. They were all asking more than $9000. This was low mile, stock and as rust free as possible for a 914. The electrics worked and the motor turned over. I didn’t want to try to start it since it had been sitting for more than 20 years. I figured I would need to go through the motor and replace seals and gaskets at a minimum. The engine condition was secondary since I ultimately wanted to do a /6 conversion. I couldn’t believe my luck in finding a 3.0 motor 2 blocks from where my 914 is sitting! Since I found the 911 motor faster than anticipated, I decided not to go through the 1.7 and just jump into the /6 conversion.

The above pictures were before. These are the after. I took the car to Cryo-Detail because I hate working on greasy, dirty cars.

Undercarriage looks pretty good- good bones. I'm having the undercarriage of my '71 cryo-cleaned on Thursday. Will be curious how much they can do in 1/2 day... It hasn't been in any bad weather for probably 20 years but has accumulated a fair amount of road grime.
On the lift all ready for cleaning but I'm moving it close to the door because I don't know how messy it will get! And I've now moved the other cars away!!

Boy, if that was a FL car it must not have been anywhere the coast! My sister had a '69 beetle way back when and she lived about a block off Daytona Beach. That car was a pile of rust within a couple years!!

I think you are making a mistake putting in a -6. Ultimately with that tub...you are better off for the same money putting in a 2056 TIV and keeping all the stock bits as they are.
That'd be my advice having done it. Had mine 20 years and sold it 3 years ago. My tub was in the same condition or better, still had the original California blue plates when it was originally sold.
Just my .02. Tubs in that condition are really rare nowdays.
