I love to see them returned to their original structural state - especially cars like this one. Looking forward to the pictures.

so after bracing the car, we are now cutting out the bad areas. We try when ever possible to remove to the factory spot welds so that the new piece goes in as the factory would have installed it.

For those of you who do not know, this is the factory muffler. Noise from the engine comes up from the rear along with the heat. This tube muffles the sound.

Next is a picture of some of the parts we make for this area. We have welded them all together as a guide. No matter how good the puzzle master, it is always nice to see the completed parts of the puzzle to use as a guide

so today, were busy cutting and fitting a piece of replacement longitudinal. It is very important to us to keep as much of the original structure as possible, hence the odd cut. Tomorrow we will be welding and then fitting the next piece. We spot weld where the factory did and then seam butt weld where we have to cut.
914 owners and restorers are really fortunate that we have all of these replacement pieces available to us. Makes it fairly easy to save a 914

Well in two days does not look like we have accomplished much on the bahia red 73 but actually have: The long is welded in and we are not working on the door post and front right fender well. Thankfully the left side will be much easier as it never gets as much abuse as the right side

Finally we are about ready to install the heater tube muffler and close off the longitudinal. We will of course first coat the metal. Notice the reconstructed Door jamb We wasted a replacement door jamb, just using the bottom part of it.

inner wheel well repair, without using our wheel!

welded in

front inner rocker beginning the installation

bottom and front will be spot welded just like the factory did it
We have finished the inner wheel well repair and are proceeding to install the front of the inner rocker and then cap it off with the bottom of the lock post. This area, believe it or not, is where the 914 flexes the most, and the factory used three layers of metal here: The back of the inner wheel house, the inner rocker, and finally the lock post to make it strong. Very important to repair these areas strongly

Can you give us a rough idea what this type of metalwork costs to replace?

to do the inner rocker, long repair, and sill, 20 hours per side. Metal work costs about 75 per hour straight time. (painting is additional)

The left side will be quicker and easier because it is not as rusted. The combination of the battery acid running down the frame, plus the fact that the right side of the car is always next to the slushy curb, causes more rust problem than the driver side.
