Hi All!

I'm a new Rennlist member and have been reading up on the 912 and trying to figure out which year/type I should go after with a budget of $40k. Obviously at that price car won't be perfect and I plan to drive mine on weekends so don't need and can't afford a mint garage queen. I live in hot and sunny socal so will want AC. Any recommendations and years and what to look for?

try to buy the short wheel base 1965-1968.
3 gauge cars are from 1965-1966, so you might get a better deal on a 67-68.

The color combo is really nice and the car looks the part!
The COA color is also really nice!

Color change will hurt the seller somewhat, but would make a nice buy for you!

If you can find any history on the car it would help.
A ppi would also be nice if possible.

I have owned both early 912 and early 911. Many aspects of this redone 912 seem attractive, but at the current bid (which has not hit the reserve) it isn't cheap. A PPI is a must, which is a problem with a sight-unseen ebay purchase. Caveat emptor. Can you get out to Tempe, AZ to see it? It could be anything from a creampuff car to a total disaster. You need to know about rust, about the engine, whatever.

Unique color that isn't aubergine. 68 has a lot of one year only things and last SWB. I prefer a 5 gauge to a 3 gauge.

That 912 has been on the market for a long time...
With the $40K I would buy gold coins they are easy to stack and do not require maintenance.

I owned a 66 912 for a decade. Bought it for $2800. Drove it from LA to Topeka KS and towed it from Topeka to KC. Rebuilt the engine for $1500, stripped it to the bone and redid the whole car for about $3000 and a lot of hours of work. It was polar met silver with a ducktail. Top speed was down 5mph but the engine ran a lot cooler. Even on a hot summer day, you could open the front vents and the back windows and stay cool in the car. When it was cold though, the car was freezing in the night but if the sun was out it was OK. After a few years all restored, I sold it for about what I had into it.

Sometime in the next 20 years the price of these cars doubled and doubled again. And doubled again.

I don't understand why. They are prone to rust, many of the parts are made of what I would call 'pot metal' or are just old and soft and the performance is less than a Prius C.

The greatest joy in having the car was when I had to put a new clutch in - just me, a jack and some stands in the driveway - took off the rear engine cover (where the plate mounts), two bolts to the motor mount, 4 bolts to the tranny, wire to the coil, fuel line and voila the engine was out. Put the new clutch in, put it back together - all done in 90 minutes, total cost $150.

$40,000 buys a lot of car - a quick look at cargurus and you can see 520hp SL 63 AMG convertible for less than 40k.
