gear oil
Southwest Petrol. (swepco) is the climbing gear oil , and 201 is bright blu in color. there is one step up with moly added. This however is more than folks need . code # 205 and not blu.. Stahwille

I think you mean 203, not 205. And just for people's reference, while 203 is a great oil, it is not recommended in applications where a clutch type LSD is in place. It's too slick with the moly in it.

Sorry I never got back to you on this. I didn't see the reply until it was bumped.
The way that molybdenum disulfide aka moly works in a gearbox is that it provides boundary lubrication by bonding itself to the surface of the gearteeth, bearings, etc. It creates a long lasting wear surface that significantly increases restistance to the oil shearing and metal on metal contact. It basically aids in boundary lubrication both at start up and at high temps when the oil is least effective. Especially on these old gearboxes, some of which are pushing 40 years old, it will help to increase the lifespan of the gears themselves as well as the ring and pinion.
In my experience it is not too slick for Porsche's proprietary synchronizers as found in all 356 and early 911 gearboxes up until the release of the G50 box in the late 80's. However it does significantly reduce the effectiveness of an LSD by coating the friction discs, which is why we don't recommend it for that particular application.

So 203 is ok in there as well. Good to know as my tranny is actually 42 years old, never rebuilt or opened, pushing 450,000 miles and still getting tracked regularly. They just don't make them like they used to..... An yes she still shifts perfectly.
