Default Broken stud at the case end

What is the best way to remove a broken head stud close to the case?
There is not enough surface to hold on to with the stud remover.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Try an easy out, usually works.

How much is protruding from the case? Assume the engine is out of the car and the cylinders are removed?? If it's broken off flush, or close to flush, drilling it out will be about the only option unless you have access to a shop with EDM capabilities. If there's anything to grab onto you could try using vice grips or a small pipe wrench (as barbaric as that sounds). Remember heat is your friend as a lot of these were installed with thread locker which responds well when heated. Good luck! -John

There's tons of info out there on this. If you have enough material exposed you can even weld a nut on it....PB blaster and a bit of heat is always your friend.

With all due respect to TTSurgeon DO NOT use an easy out.
They are a great way to make a problem worse
A picture of the broken stud in situ would help us recomend a repair

I've used them before without issue, lucky I guess.

It has broken off almost flush. There is about 4mm of material protruding. I'm going to have a machine shop take it out.

I can't argue against that. If you mess it up it would go there anyway.

I had a couple broken studs. One broke off with about 1/4" of stud left. I was able to get a pipe wrench to bite on the stud and unscrew. I had another that I left to the machine shop. I have broken an extractor before and your really done if that happens. Not sure how the machine shop does it, but it is not worth taking the risk for <$100.
