Follow up to my new 79 930
I had the top end rebuilt as well as the tranny synchros....
I still have a slight bit of smoke on startup.....only about 200 miles on the car since then.....probably not seated yet but wanted opinions. Also the tranny has been freshly redone and is stiff shifting....I assume this will lessen over the next 500 miles or so? Thanks Chas |

Is this your first air-cooled, horizontally-opposed, motor? They all do that, to some degree...the longer they sit, the longer the puff. What gear oil did your rebuilder use? As far as I'm concerned, Swepco 201 is the gold standard for the 4-sp 930 box. YMMV... |

How much smoke...a puff that goes away in a couple seconds?

Could be a little bit of a oil on the cold side of the turbo

Chas, do you suspect the 3LDZ is the original, 48k, turbo? This would be easy to check. Remove the intercooler and separate the up-pipe from the compressor housing. If the turbo seals are loosing their effectiveness, you may find some oil pooled at the compressor outlet...which, when the engine is started, gets sucked into the intake and burned. |

Mel Swepco 201 was what was used.
+1 for Allen's comment on Swepco 201. A good condition/properly setup transaxle with Swepco 201 should be very smooth. |

As Bud said, a 930 box with Swepco should be [buttery] smooth. Keep us in the loop. |
