How would you sell this year if you wanted to?
Looking at the latest Hagerty values I have to consider moving ahead with selling my 79'. What auction would be recommended? Or what method of advertising?
My plan is to sell and look for a low mileage super clean 996tt. Am I crazy to give up an appreciating asset for a depreciating asset. Will Newton's law be realized "What goes up must come down"? Look forward to all thoughts on the subject.

I personally think the Porsche 930's have many years of appreciation ahead- but anyone who has owned one for very long no doubt has plenty of equity right now- if you would rather have the cash the car you should sell. I'd market everywhere hardcore Porsche guys hang out- rennlist, pelican, pca and ebay. If you have an exceptional car you might consider one the auctions- I've never sold a car at an auction but always thought it would be a worth it to try- be picky who you list with - as some are excellent other's really poor.

It is all about what you want. Your 930 is appreciating and it is a beauty. 996TT is a great car and currently extremely under valued. I also think that they have aged well and will start to appreciate. If you do get 6TT skip '01 and get the '02 - '05, and not buy a Tiptronic as I question their future appreciation rate.
Phil, About 3 years ago I sold fairly nice and somewhat rare car American muscle car with Mecum. The experience was A++. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with them.

That being said the 930 gives some visceral thrills that have been modified out of the 996. They are widely different cars. I figure the appreciation in the 930 will offset the depreciation in the 996TT, so it works out fairly cheap to own both.
Hows that for rationalization ?!?

Same thing will happen to the 996. Porsche faithful will allow it back into the fold. Crap one can buy a 2001 Turbo car be bought for $39,999. I doubt it is in Concourse #1 condition (had 27,000 miles). But regardless if it isn't we all know Porsche's have Good Bones so some investing in the car can really make the car into a good #1 Concourse example or a #2 daily driver whi h you still have to be **** about parking amongst others cars and PUCKER UP like a BMW driver would or if you lived in Reno!

I've got both, my 80 930 and 04 996tt. A couple of my buddies mentioned that I should sell the 930 due to them being so valuable now, but I'm like nope. I really don't think the 996tt is a depreciating asset, the prices seem to be stable or should I say have gone up in the past couple years.

I just sold my 996TT which shared garage space with my 930 Slantnose. I got a 996 GT2 to replace it with. 996TT's are starting to creep up in price and I sold mine for $5k more than I bought it for. That said, know the car and its issues or you will be paying to fix them. And don't listen to anyone about years to avoid, they are all the same except the '01 doesn't have a glove box. Mine was an '01 and I have to say was probably the best car I have owned. My girlfriend still gives me crap for getting the GT2 as it is just much rawer and not as....civilized.
As for selling, about a year ago I wanted to sell my '86 930 with 22k miles on it. Was VERY tough. I ended up selling to a dealer in Texas who had a buyer lined up. I contacted the dealer because I was looking at a car they had for sale and asked about a trade. They gave me a top dollar quote but the same day the car they had sold. I called back 2 weeks later and they honored the quote. Anyways, they are hard to sell if you want top money for them. You may want to try to consign but you give some money up there. Oddly enough, people feel comfortable paying 30% more at a reputable dealer rather than buying privately. I have had the same experience with every classic car I have owned. When I sell my slant I will try forums first and then auction.

I sold my '85 on ebay several months ago and got what I thought was a very strong price. I thought about the 996TT, and 2 years ago, we were strongly considering selling the 930 & buying one, but I never did. (Glad I didn't, because prices on the 930 really went crazy after that) I had a very bad experience with exotic dealers who were trying to absolutely steal ($25K) the 930, when they were easily in the $50k range at the time. One wanted me to send my car to California in a trade for a 996TT on his lot, and then he would send his car back here and we'd finalize the deal. I didn't think it was a good idea to have my car way out there before I got a chance to inspect his. Rotten, especially since his dealer friend here had inspected it and referred it to him. "Trust me" seemed to be their motto.
Anyway, I sold the car to the winning bidder on ebay and we were both very happy. Don't groan... but I went out & bought a '06 Dodge Viper coupe. Although I love Porsches, I think it's also strongly undervalued right now. It was time for something a little different; I'd had the 930 for 7 years.
Anyway, without going off topic too much, ebay worked out fine for me, and was considerably cheaper & easier than an auction house like Mecum. Just set your reserve price and if it doesn't make it, then no harm done.
