Default Distributor Disassembly?

Not sure my vacuum advance or retard is working correctly. Diaphragm holds vacuum. Vacuum on the outer pot connection rotates the outer ring in ccw direction. Vacuum on the inner pot does nothing, but appears that with pressure counters the vacuum on the outside pot. I'm confused I would think the vacuum on the outer pot should rotate cw in order to fire sooner. Can anyone help explain this? Thanks for any input.

What year is your car? On my '79 the outer pot retards the timing at idle. The inner pot is for timing retard at boost. No vacuum advance, only vacuum retard and pressure (boost) retard.

I have a 79. Now this makes some sense finally. So when boost comes on the inner pot with pressure retards against the mechanical advance, right? Thanks for the enlightenment.

Correct

The outer pot retards the timing to 5* ATDC at idle. As soon as the throttle is pressed the vacuum goes away and timing goes to 0*. As the RPMs increase the mechanical advance will max out at around 31* BTDC. When on boost the inner pot will see pressure and retard the timing some, maybe to 26* BTDC.

The manual instructions for setting timing starts with having the vacuum lines connected and setting to 5* ATDC with idle at 950 RPM. Once initial timing is set disconnect and plug outer pot vacuum line, rev engine to 4k RPM and check timing. It should be close to 31* BTDC.
