Default 2001 911Turbo 'tune' failed Massachusetts Inspection.

It would appear that this vehicle had passed the yearly inspection 7 times before with the tune. But now driving it can get one a ticket. In 60 days the registration will be revoked. The vehicle has been referred to a DOT MAC center (Motorist Assistance Center) for retesting. Massachusetts has upgraded software.

Short of removing the tune which would be sad as this vehicle does 'run' in an impressive manner, could the owner put a stock tuned ECU in it and retest and save the tuned ECU for track/off road events?
