930 itch needs scratching
So, I've got the new car bug but the fever is telling me to get a classic, air cooled beast. Specifically, I am wanting a late-1980's Guards Red, 930 cabriolet. I like the notion of the 1989 to get the 5 speed.
My first Pcar was a 996.2 C4 Cabriolet, and ever since we traded it for my wife's truck, I have lamented not having an open top adventure vehicle. She drove the C4 as her daily for a while, but IMS failure fears and her very long commute ended that dream.
My birthday just passed and she asked what I wanted, so I whipped out eBay and showed her a few I was looking at. I suspected she was going to freak out. Surprisingly, she missed convertible-ing also and was all over the idea. So here we are.
I've found a few, but I am having a hard time getting my head around the asking prices for these things. Also, I have never bought a car out of town before.
Long story short, just polling the audience for any advice. If you are in the Louisville area, I'll buy you a beer and trade test drives with my GT3. Beer after test drives*.
eBay - $55K - 1987
eBay - 1989 - $80K
Autotrader - 1989 - $48K

Bobby,
Your thread is ON TIME!!!! I just drove my 930 for around 50 miles and I was going to start a "wow" thread! The sensation, the looks, the feel is real and not sterilized! I had not owned an air cooled pcar since the late 90's ('91 964 Turbo)...These cars are just AWESOME!!! (I am now thinking about picking up an additional 964 Turbo as they are an investment! IMO...)
I looked for a few years until I found a really nice 2-owner car with history, etc. Take your time, get the cleanest that you can get and enjoy and the prices are FOR SURE going up!
The 997s are both parked now! And the 997TT is looking very very vulnerable these days although after 6 years of service I do feel some loyalty to it!
Not in Louisville...GOOD LUCK!

See, this is what I'm talking about. I have this notion that the 930 is going to be a refreshing and authentic Porsche experience. Don't get me wrong, I love the GT3 and will keep that for the track and when I want high speed precision to the grocery store and back.
So, what is the authority on valuations here? I am seeing prices ranging wildly. I want to buy the right car, and I know that represents an investment, but at the same time, I want to feel like I get a fair deal on it.

The one on Autotrader sounds like a fantastic deal...If it were me I pursue that one. It desrves a closer look. then I would move to the 87. The next 89 is a bit high.

10-4. I shot an email to the Autotrader dude.
I worry about that Deutschland sticker on the back though. That is right on the paint. That can't be good.

Fall/Winter is right around the corner, so there maybe some "seasonal" deals...

It may be a turbo look cab, or a conversion. If it is a turbo look, you need to check for the turbo rear trailing arms and the turbo brakes.

I think that one on Autotrader is the same one as this one
Same antenna, same dust covers in the wheels and same mileage. Looks like those guys got it for $48K or less and are flipping it on eBay for $80K.
That's a sweet business to be in.
