Stupid Question No. 64 - Stone Guards...
 

So - OK - I've lost count of the number of silly questions I've asked about my '88 930 - so, I'm tagging it number 64... ;)

For those who have replaced their stone guards, whats the best way to remove the old ones without harming the paint..? I've read Goo-Gone, hair dryer, some razor blade thingy (<<<- I don't dare get that near my 930!), and other assorted views/opinions... Anyone want to post what worked for them, rather than relaying what they've read on the Internet?? Please??!!!

Also - the covers for the torsion bar tubes.... Do you just "cover them over" and allow the circular indent to outline them? Or - are you supposed to cut them out somehow???

As an update on my 930 - I bought new rotors as my lovely wife Jen - for Xmas - actually BOUGHT ME PAGID PADS!!

Use a hair dryer - get it good and warm on one corner and peel it back gently, heating as you go. It will take awhile and leave some glue behind, which can be removed with paint thinner. That's how I did it anyways.

If you're not done already, I'd recommend 3M adhesive remover for any residue after removal. It's a little kinder to the paint than regular mineral spirits. At least that's what the detail guys tell me. A hair dryer on "high" is still a lot safer than a heat gun on "low".

Sorry - it's been a little frantic at work, so I missed your question..!!

I used a hairdryer and "goo-gone".. Remove the rocker panel (easy!), and I started from top to bottom. As I started peeling - I used the "goo-gone", waited a minute or so - and peeled another inch or so. I was scared to death of peeling off any paint, so I also peeled parallel to the paint/body work...

Resurrecting this. I need to replace the stone guards on my '88. Im trying to avoid the cheap repo stone guards and want the exact originals. Ive seen some folks replace their stone guards and the guards are way too smooth unlike the factory originals that have a sandpaper like surface to them and are thicker. In fact Id say more often than not, the replaced ones I see are not even close to the originals.

It says OEM on Pelican ones but Im not sure that means a whole lot if you read their explanation. I want the exact same ones Im pulling off the car. No more no less. I gotta think the Suncoast ones are the real deal ones.

Yes, I have a set of the Pelican guards (actually - I bought two sets) and they are "right on". As I'm still working on the suspension bit, I've used Magnagrafik for a while - which are terrific:

I cant imagine all these stone guards are identical in quality and impossible to differentiate side by side?

Pelican has them for under $60 a set.
Suncoast has them for a little over $100 a set
Direct from Porsche Classic they are $160 a set.

Somethings gotta give here. The originals are like 200 grit sand paper. They are thick and rough mamba jambas. The el cheapo ones are like 1000 grit sand paper and look like black construction paper.

Im not very bright, so I must be missing something obvious.

You have a very valuable car. Why are you worrying over a few dollars. If you buy it from Porsche Classic you know it is correct.

I have sold a few of these to RL members with no complaints.
