Will the 930 addiction finally get to me?
 

I was a Rennlist member years ago when (I think) it started as porschefans.com. I owned a cherry '85.5 944 that I drove for 75k miles and sold on this forum in '02. Since then I've had Jeeps (still have 1), Harleys (still have 1), STi, 350Z, trucks, and a '65 Ford F250 (still have it).

Recently I've been searching for a muscle car - 68/69 Chevelle or Nova big block, CJ Tornio/Fairlane, Tri-5 Chevy, etc. But I went to a drive in car show Sunday (Caffeine & Octane for those in ATL) and my love of Porsches drew me over to that section most of the morning. So it looks like I'm really leaning towards another Porsche.

I was originally thinking of a clean 964 but the car I've always lusted after is a 930 turbo - I know, who hasn't. Since it won't be a daily driver and I can fix just about anything that has moving parts, I'm really leaning towards trying to find one in good shape.

I'll be lurking around for while as I'm in no hurry so you might see me around. I like to learn as much as possible before buying something. :thumbsup:

If you haven't driven a 930 as of yet - drive one. As soon as the turbo lag lets up and gets to full boast - you will not want to get anything else. Remember that this is 35 year old technology and there is not any electronic drive train control. So hang on, but first you have to LEARN how to drive a 930. They do not drive like a normal aspirated Porsche - at least under boost.

I've driven a 951, 911, 996 turbo, but never a 930 turbo. I'm free any time if a member in ATL wants to throw me their keys. :roflmao::cheers:

I know they handle very different. My '08 STi was probably faster/as fast as a 930 turbo but it was AWD and handled like a dream.

I've had this 930 Turbo for almost 30 years.

I'm not sure what an sti does but a bone stock 930 is pretty mild by modern standards but with a bigger I/C, bigger Turbo, different cams, reworked fuel distributor, and a nice set of headers the 930 becomes a beast.

My advice if you're serious it to buy one sooner than later, these are appreciating fairly rapidily right now.

There is nothing like a 930.

Drive it first...I bought the fastest one I drove. I might be the only guy on earth who has no problem with the lag but it could be the combo of my turbo and cams that make the lag seem unimportant. I have it as one the fastest appreciating classic cars. But, the best part is they are an absolute Blast to Drive. loud,fast, and unruly that is what it is all about.

The STi is a great car and probably is faster than a stock 930.....but then again, we're talking about a 30 year old car here and it's still faster than a lot of cars out there today.

What makes driving the 930 fun for me is all the attention I get when I'm driving it. It's such an iconic car that you basically get the thumbs up from every age group....

If I can manage to get a 930, AND keep my 951 then that is likely the extent of my Porsche ownership. I would be stuck in the 980's. Of course for my wife I could get the Cayenne if she would go it.

Where are all of the ATL members with 930's? :burnout:
